Laptops Ultraportable

OK.... so once upon a time I was going to buy my parents a new comp (mobo+CPU+RAM+PSU+gfx+cabby) while reusing the monitor and HDD, DVD-RW etc....

However, it seems they now need a laptop instead. So what I plan to do is give them my existing Inspiron 6400 (with 1 or 2 gigs of RAM) and a core T7200.... talk about overkill for what they are going to do with it... and buy a new ultraportable myself. Probably add a big monitor at home and be done with it.

Now, I need suggestions as to which companies to look at from Dell, HP and Lenovo. I don't like Dell much, the finish leaves much to be desired and they only have the XPS 1210 in that range.

What about HP vs Lenovo? Why are Lenovo prices so high? Is there something in them that makes them special?

How good is the touch screen on the HP Pavillion tablet PC? Is it a delicate thing that is likely to break (any more than a regular laptop screen anyway)?

I'm not really concerned about battery life that much (2 -3 hours is enough). Nor am I asking for models - just brands. If I do go through with this, I'll be buying in a month or two, not now.

The XPS line is by miles better than Inspirons in fit , finish & durability

Get the XPS is you can...though it is a lil heavy for a 12" but the rugged Mg Alloy casing makes it very durable

If not, Fujitsu makes some brilliant ultraportables...actually , Fujitsu is one of the best in the ultraportable business but they are pricey

Don't look at Sony (I Know you won't ;) )

Panny would be unaffordable :(

You can get cheap 12" Averatecs but the quality is really subpar (from the build to the LCD to the Keyboard)

Skip Acer, they aren't good at the Ultraport business

If you like Turions, the HP TX1000 tablet is a great buy...actually so is the Compaq B1950 but it isn't available in the US

what's your budget like anyway?

I guess the XPS m1330 should probably be out soon too. The design looks neat, so you could consider that alongside the XPS m1210.

BTW Anish why not Lenovo? Although they've added on an entry-level laptop lineup, i thought their 'Thinkpad' lineup still maintains that distinctive build quality?

My dad's Engg classmate is Lenovo Asia-Pacific VP and he himself told me that Lenovo is having serious QC issues due to the marketing departments rampant demands for price cuts.

Besides only the initial Thinkpad's which IBM sold were good, in the end a few months before they sold to Lenovo, their TP quality was very very bad (I'm talking about the 40-45k range), no comments on the 60+ notebooks.
