I have installed NFS MW lot of times. I know that the autorun.exe file has to be run in Win2000 compatibility mode. I tried installing on my current pc (see sig.) and the game simply doesn't install. I have set the compat. mode but still autorun.exe refuses to run.

If I dont set the compat. mode it gives the directx error and exits setup. What should I do?

what directx error?...i have installed mw loads of times n i never faced any error..i never had to change any compatibility mode either :S

the compatibility mode is only for NFS:Carbon . for installing Carbon , I had to set it under compatibility(autoexec/setup) . looks like a bad disc copy with your MW ?

Even NFS MW has to be installed in compatibility mode. In fact even its demo too had to be installed the same way. And the problem continues with Carbon as well. This is a known issue. More info about it is here.

But even after setting the Windows 2000 compatibility mode the setup doesn't start. I dont think the cd is damaged or anything. If I dont set compat. mode then setup runs till the directx error and then exits. I have installed the game many times from the same cd's. This is the first time that this has happened.

I have directx 9.0c installed. This is the error that I am getting during installation :

This is the solution and it WORKS:
Do this:
1. Copy all the dvd files to your hdd.
2. Set your autorun.exe and nfsmw.exe compatibility mode to Windows 2000 (i know you've done this...)
3. Go to /Autorun/autorun.cfg, and set the value of "directx version" from 9.0c to 0. This is very important, since NFS MW runs only on some earlier directx 9c version and refuses to install on the later directx 9.0c versions (which i guess you must be having)....
4. Now run autorun.exe...it should install properly now
Cheers!

Funny I have heard about lots of probs like this for alot of EA games and not just NFS series. I have NFSMW and Carbon, BF2, C&C Generals and I never once set compatibity or had any kind or DX probs. Just lucky i guess:bleh:

I have the game on 4 cd's. I copied all the files to a folder on my hard drive. I then modified the autorun.cfg file. When I tried to run autorun.exe I got a message asking me to insert the cd in disk drive. Setup runs from the cd only and the modified cfg file doesn't come into the picture at all!

I installed the directx setup that came on the cd still to no avail. This is driving me crazy now.:@

I have played this game many times before after setting just the compatibility mode. This is the 1st time that I am trying to install it on my current pc. I am at my wits end.

Just rip your 4 cds to iso images on your hdd. Use daemon tools to load that iso and you are good to go. Mount cd1 and start setup, when it asks for cd2 just mound cd2 image and so on.. And use sd4hide to mask the cd protection. SImple and works.

Ok. I did the following :

1. set aurorun to windows 2000 compatibility mode.
2. modified the autorun.cfg file to directx 9.0
3. created the 1st cd image from the modified files.
4. created the remaining 3 images from the cd's directly.
5. mounted the 1st cd image with Daemon Tools.

It gets to the EULA point and still gives me the directx error and quits setup. I even downloaded the Dec 2006 directx redistributable package from MS and installed it. To no avail.

Just to make sure that there was no problem with my system I installed FarCry demo and played it. No probs there. I have run directx diagnostics too. No probs there either.

Where the hell is the problem and how do I solve it?
