Hi

Desperate situation!!!

Unable to install Vista or 7. Installs XP just fine.

Gigabyte P31 + Q9550 + 4850 + 2X2GB Transcend RAM

Just swapped the board from P5N E SLi

BIOS @ Default

You need to add more info... are you installing to whole hard drive or just a partition on the hard drive?... do you have multiple drives and/or mutiple OS's? Which partition, if there are more than one, is the active partition?

What sort of problems are you having... does the OS just refuse to install... are you getting an error message part way through installation... if so what is the error message? etc.... etc......

Much more info needed to help out :P

Single HDD Green WD 640GB
3 partitions
Install ends before asking for which partition to install to

I boot through DVD
Windows Vista logo appears
The screen just after that with the mouse cursor is shown endlessly and the process ends.
Nothing after that

I'm not sure what exactly might be the problem.. Check whether the installation medium is alright.
You can also install Windows 7 from existing OS.. at least, it allowed me to install from my Vista OS. I just run the Win 7 disc in Vista, and it asked me whether you want to upgrade or do a fresh installation. I chose the 2nd one, and then it gave me the list of partitions, and after doing all the formalities, it started the installation by copying the necessary files. Then asked for a reboot, and upon reboot it directly went into the Win 7 setup menu. It was a routine installation after that..
You can try the same from XP.. it might work..!

P.S: Always backup all essential data before doing a fresh install or a reinstall..

^^ That method won't work from XP. My suggestion wait for some time.. It took around 10 mins for the next menu to appear for me. It happens even with Live CDs for me.. I heard it happens with older sony drives. Just try for 10-15 mins..

how do i make sure that xp partition is the active one?

i think it has got something to do with the bios. what say?

Sounds like a Corrupt media, or a bad Drive, check the same with another DVD drive and a disc with which a successful installation is done on some other system..........

check on both DVD drives, checked both Win 7 and Vista so that is not the issue.

XP installs fine so unlikely for the HDD to be an issue.

I think it has got to do with the BIOs. But can't figure out what.

Do other P31 owners face this issue?

c is active partition i guess, so that is out as well.

jst installed vista through xp, worked. but can't get either of the two to install from bootup.

and can't install win 7 as win 7 is 64 and vista is 32 bit, so...

@OP Are you able to use the same Vista/windows 7 DVD and install it on a different machine?

It is possible that your partition table is corrupt, you can try booting into xp console repair, and typing fixmbr. See if that works.

If not.... it depends on how much you want to keep XP. Firstly... Vista and Windows 7 do better if they are installed on the 1st partition.

You can try moving the XP partition over and create a space at the beginning of the hard drive to install 7 or Vista. (You can use the free gParted livecd or something like Acronis Disk Director)

If that doesn't work... try backing up XP to an external Hard drive as an Image using something like Acronis Image. Then wipe the drive and install Vista/7 from scratch... after.... if all is working you can put back the xp partition from the image you saved, and use bcedit or something similar to fix the boot for xp.
