I bought a samsung 160 gb hdd about a month back from Lamington. Initially i partitioned it and set up win xp on it, which was running without any issues.

I decided to change my faulty cdrom drive with another one which is when the problems started. I started getting 'Insert boot disk to continue' errors.

Since I had a hunch that the OS which I had installed was virus infected (Kaspersky refused to install on it), I decided to format and reinstall a cleaner version of XP.

Which brings me to the problem - Windows setup shows that the drive does not have any partitions, and does not let me create any as well. I tried various utilities from Hirens Boot CD (check the images), but none of them let me create a partition.

The last one is a screenie of the Samsung HDD repair tool.

I dont see the drive name in BIOS as well.... has it gone kaput?

Any help would be appreciated.

seems like mbr has become corrupt due to some virus. Use testdisk to repair the partition entries, or if you have a live cd of ubuntu and can see the drive, format the drive through livecd to ext2 file system and then format it with windows installer to ntfs.

Thanks for replying!

After a lot of time wasting, I finally figured that the issue is with the IDE cable....sheesh!
