Read this in a regional daily about Univercell's theft insurance scheme.

A guy had bought a phone for 11k and the Univercell guys have persuaded him to get his phone insured(2.5% of cost). The guy had lost his mobile and then has been asked to follow this procedure.

You have to file an FIR and then again have to get a not traceable certificate from the Police Station(min. 15 days after the FIR is filed). Dunno how come the Policeman will give us a Not Traceable certi for a mobile. The guy has been unable to get a replacement till date. I don't remember the full contents of the news

Would like to get some feedback from ppl who have actually lost their cellphone but got it back due to this insurance.

At least some feedback about whether they have accidentally damaged their phones and had repairs done for free or got the phone replaced.

This would really help people as they can make an informed decision rather than waste money on worthless mobile insurance from univercell.

Normal procedure for any insurance claim would be as above

You must file and FIR in nearest police station where mobile phone has been lost and you have obtain a non traceability certificate - in normal circumstances you get in 3months max if you know local police guys

non traceability certificate means as all of us know the police to their maximum resources and ability thoroughly searched and could not find despite their best efforts, which means phones is officially lost

Then along with FIR and Non tracebility certificate, you can claim your newer mobile

Thats the point right. If it is a vehicle then i know ppl getting non tracability certi. But will they issue it for a mobile phone

Just want to know whether ppl have actually benefited from this and have gone thru the procedure and got a replacement

Insurance for a mobile is not really worth it.

My friend had a very bitter expereince on this. He had to visit the police station for several days for FIR and the non tracebility doc; finally had to pay them bribe to get the documentation and that too after several months. The case has to be registered at the police station closest to the place of theft,; so if you lost your mobile say while out of town or far off from your place, then you need to visit that particular police station several times!

And then there was some problem with the insurance company who did not pay him anything and was treated like he was trying to cheat the insurance company to get the money.

Overall, my suggestion is to not to go for insurance on the mobile. It is just not worth all the trouble. Buy a mobile which is easily affordable or be careful not to loose it.
