Universal USB modem - query/buying advice

Hello mates, till now i am using my nokia 2700c as a modem and browsing net using my aircel sim. Now i am to try out a USB modem. Any suggestion on this. Totally newbie+n00b here :P

Will there be any speed drop if i use those modems instead of my phone modem and do they support all kinds of sim cards (i want one that support all sim cards). Do they support EDGE network as well.

I have seen this on ebay, how is this.

It would be better if you plan to use it as a one time investment . So buy a better hardware if money is not an issue.
You can get a huawei UMG 1831 modem which supports 21mbps speeds. Will cost you in the range of 2.5k.
Also airtel is selling their modem in every brick and mortar shop for 1.65k for the 7mbps modem. Do check if they are network locked though.
 
^ thanks for your reply mate, but in my case budget is really an issue. I am not planning for 3g yet, 2g will do. Also is there any 3g unlimited internet plan from any network provider?
 
I think there was one from bsnl. Have heard from several users that they can use their ipad plans to get true unlimited 3g. So all that is your luck.
These modems work fine in 2G/edge. Also the price difference is not huge so go for a better hardware anyday.

I have heard some firmware issue on this modem, which firmware is best as per your suggestion?
My current firmware is : 11.826.03.01.420
 
If your modem is working fine, then dont play with its firmware,many people have messed up their modems like lost IMEI,disconnecting issues etc etc by trying to flash different firmwares,so let it be the way it came.
 
Got an update message stating that a new firmware is available, what to do now?

Guys my modem frequently disconnects and connects, i can hear the hardware remove/inserted sound and also my net gets disconnected. What to do?

Disconnection and connection can be due to network issue but hardware remove/inserted sound doesnt look good,may be hardware or firmware issue

That is the most stable firmware for UMG1831 and even my modem is on that firmware since many months with constant,stable good speeds.

Its not network issue, its clearly modem issue, I have faced the same problem few months back, disconnecting every 5-7 seconds and reconnecting, got a replacement device and it worked like a charm with the same sim, never disconnected even after 2 hours of usage.
 
^^Yup,the hardware remove/inserted sound doesnt happen due to network issue,its a modem issue.
