The National Capital Region is in the middle of a worsening power crisis. To cut down power consumption, the Uttar Pradesh government has ordered all malls, including the ones in Noida, to be shut by 7pm.

Gurgaon’s power consumption, the Uttar Pradesh government has ordered all malls, including the ones in Noida, to be shut by 7pm. Gurgaon’s electricity situation is unlikely to improve before August, Haryana power minister has said. In the Capital, large parts of south Delhi faced prolonged outages on Sunday as the maximum temperature was recorded four degrees above normal at 43.6 Celsius.

No glowing signboards will be allowed across UP, the government has said. “Streetlights will be allowed only between 8pm and 4.30am,” CL Gupta, a superintendent engineer with a power discom in Noida, said.

The UP order is likely to be enforced from Monday. In Delhi, glitches in the transmission lines caused a shortfall of 200 MW, leading to prolonged cuts in areas including Friends Colony, Nizamuddin, Jangpura, East of Kailash, Lodhi Road, Vasant Kunj and Munirka between 2.30pm and 5.30pm.Parts of east Delhi may face power cuts, too, as a conductor has broken down at Kalindi Kunj on the Badarpur-Noida-Ghazipur line.
The week-long water crisis, too, continued unchecked. The Delhi Jal Board claimed Monday would be better as the water level at the Wazirabad plant had begun to rise after Haryana released more water.

Power cuts stretched up to almost 12 hours in the twin cities of Noida and Greater Noida, affecting water supply as well. Parts of Gurgaon went without power for 12-14 hours.

"Technical snags at our power plants and shortage of coal for thermal units have hampered generation. The situation will improve only by August," Haryana power minister Capt Ajay Singh Yadav said on Saturday.

The labour department order, issued on Sunday, comes into effect from today. Medicine shops, multiplexes, single-screen cinemas and offices are exempt, but all other commercial activity is required to shut down after dark. This effectively pushes UP back by decades to the pre-liberalization era, when black-outs were common.

Restaurants will be required to close by 10pm. All other commercial establishments, including even neighbourhood kirana stores, will have to be shuttered by 7pm. The labour department has threatened strict action against commercial establishments flouting the order.

This is what happens when you keep sleeping over projects like 2 defunct sub stations and keep building idiotic parks.
I hope the govt also releases a statement pinning the blame on the gfn myopic prev cm of the state. :|

I was thinking that the power crisis was adamant only in TN, sorry for being ignorant.
Too much consumption, too much profits, too many losses are something which business pple are to reckon with.
BTW nice solution by the UP gov, would be nicer if TN gov actually follows it in Chennai.

Cons: Get ready to get lower state tax income since business will be dull. Also inflation will rise.

I think that its better to live with the above rather than hotter climate.

We are having such stark power outages and our great government is happy donating power lines and 500 megawatt power to Pakistan ?
The great enemy of our country enjoying 500 megawatts on our cost.

Where is our country heading. ??

I think that was bcause of the Indus power & water sharing agreement.
Else don't expect the Communists and BJP to sit quiet.

I wish they would pass and order for our politicians to work like from 7 AM - 8 AM. That is enough. The country would be better off w'out them.

;)

UP has always had a power shortage..

2 hour powercuts in summer as a minimum. Often going up to 6 hours. Usually 1-2 times a year its 24 hours

This goes back more than 8 years

Often in villages, thats true, officials think then can outwink villagers stating some obnoxious reasons. No wonder why pple steal power.
Thats the same in TN. Happening for 3~4 years.

Even with that treaty. Isn't our population higher than them.
Why we should follow decades old treaty. ?
We should revise treaty and redraw water division.

Why should we share power when treaty is just for water??

They've said that the power supply will be shut off at 7.00 PM. The shops are free to run them on their own power i.e. generators etc...
