Prime Minister Narendra Modi has decided not to merge state-owned telecom firms MTNL and BSNL, a move that could well be termed as the first by the present NDA government to overturn a major decision of the previous UPA government.
Sources in the government said that instead of infusing fresh capital or merging them to revive the cash-strapped and loss-making BSNL and MTNL, the PM has asked the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to consider a proposal for the outright purchase of the optic fibre cable (OFC) network of the former, which is the largest in the country. “Once owned by the DoT, the OFC network could be used for early rollout of the government’s ambitious ‘Digital India’ programme,” they added.

Everyone knows whats the state of BSNL but with MTNL joining BSNL.. Bad days a head for MTNL customers? The Department of Telecom (DoT) has fixed June 2015 as the deadline for merging Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd. The proposal has been hanging fire for three years in the face of vehement opposition by employees of the two state-owned companies.
However, the DoT has instructed the human resource managers at the two telecom PSUs to engage with employees and find a solution to their concerns. The HR department has been asked to submit a report by January. Consultations with the various employee unions will be held in March, according to the schedule prepared by the DoT
