Hi Folks,

I am planning to sell my current config to my friend and go for an upgrade

OS: Windows XP SP3 32 bit

Current config:

AMD X2 4000+

ATi 690G

2* 1GB DDR2 667

Leadtek 8800GTS 640MB

I am planning for:

E8400

P35/P45

4870

2* 1GB DDR2 800

1. Would like to know if its a big/worthy upgrade from my current config. I feel it is, but would like all your opinions too

2. Little overclocking. NO CF/SLI. I will go for only 1 card

For this which MB i would need. I wont need features like ESATA/Wifi/Firewire etc

Would request to suggest motherboard with moderate overclocking/stable and at low price. Basically a low end model of P35/P45 would be good, i think.

3. Will DDR2 800 with complement the new config or DDR2 667 would be enough

4. Currently my Rivatuner(fan at 98%) - 8800GTS/640 temps are 44/59(idle) & 54/67(load) with side fan cooling. I hope 4870 will not need any additional cooling

I already have Corsair 650W, so no issues on this front

Thanks in advance for all your suggestions :)

Buy:

E8400 - 7.5-7.8k

Asus P5Q - 8k

Sapphire 4870 - 17k

Transcend 2 x 2GB DDR2 800 - 3.8k

1) The one I suggested will be a big/worthy upgrade from your current config

2) Asus P5Q

3) DDR2 800 will be faster

4) 4870 will not need any additional cooling just use Expertool to control fan speed & keep it at 50%

1. you can save some more by going in for a MSI P45 Neo-F for about 6.5k , or you could also just go for a decent P35 m/b which should not cost you more than 5.5k for a basic board.

2. The 800 Mhz ram is a good complement to your processor.

overall looks like a nice config man :)

I would strongly recommend the P45, as the P35 is outdated now, and the P45 has extremely good OCing capability, almost as good as the X48's, which only leads by a very small margin in benchmarks, and in real world app's especially games, the P45 is a stellar performer!

TO add the icing to the cake, since you are going with the 4870, you can also Xfire later, if you choose to!

Thanks guys  . please keep pouring in your suggestions/opinions

@Udit - As i use Windows XP 32bit, I wouldnt need a 4G RAM, if i go for vista in future, i would plug in another 2GB

@fangface - Is MSI P45 Neo-F a good stable board. Price seems good

@Jasku - Is there a big diff between P45 to P35 to warrant the extra 4K.

As i said, I wont overclock much. Only little overclocking as I am afraid of warranty + on bit of budget

And I dont want CF/SLi. I would rather sell and buy a new card later. I prefer single card solution.

Well pcgamer, a newer chipset is always better, when the Biostar/MSI are available for 6.5k, I think its a great deal, if you not going to OC, you can also look at the P43 chipset.

pcgamer- the MSI boards are good stable boards. The biostar P35 board is not too bad too.

But all said and done, the advantage of a P45 over a P35 is really in overclocking and crossfire, both of which are not really important to you :)

If budget is not a constraint, spend on the P45, else P35 should do fine.

Is there a big difference in overclocking potential between P45 and P35.
I am not bothered about Xfire and dual cards

for overclocking the MSI P45 Neo-F is lower than Biostar TP35D2-A7 :)

so buy Biostar TP45 HP or a Biostar TP35D2-A7

but I think Biostar TP35D2-A7 will need a bios update first to boot with a 45nm processor

Also buy the 4GB ram now. There is no point in going for 2GB now and 2GB later as it will cause some serious mismatch issues and will hinder your ocing capability later.

And 4GB is not that expensive anymore. Get 2 sticks of 2GB Transcend DDR2 800. Most of the current stock of these sticks have Powerchip ICs on brainpower PCB.

I would stay away from that MSI board. Lately I hate what they are doing with their boards in terms of bios and ocing capabilities. Biostar TP45 should be fine for your needs.

IMO If you aint gonna OC much (or min OC'ng) then the ABIT IP35 E be enough for ~4.5k ... you can put in the extra cash for the ram or extra cooling...agreed the P45 is a better and then the P35 but that is only when you OC..

A Bit P35 @ 5.350 rit in itwares are we gettin it at the rate???:( this board shud be fine wit a E8400 wit 4gb ram and a 4870...wat els u need..:ohyeah:

Thanks guys...

I will settle with P35 board from Abit or Biostar

What is Abit P35E cost now. Is it around 4.5K or higher. Its the most popular board out here :)
