Hey guys!

So my gf's PC broke down at a time where there is a shift from Z97 to X99. I was thinking to go for the "older" set up because it will be less expensive and we already have RAM. (I was secretely hoping that the prices as well would fall for the older system but i think that won't happen that fast...)
With the earlier system her CPU and/or Motherboard broke down.
She plays games occasional and uses the machine more for work in maya, zbrush and photoshop to model/ texture game assets.

This was her old machine (which was totally sufficient - of course faster is better^^):

CASE NZXT TEMPEST EVO Crafted Series TEVO-001BK Black Steel / Plastic ATX Mid
PSU Power Supply Corsair 850W ATX12V / EPS12V
RAM G.Skill Ripjaws Series 12GB (3 x 4GB) DDR3-1333
GPU MSI GeForce GTX 460 1GB
HDD Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM
HDD Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM

Broken Components
MOBO GIGABYTE GA-X58A-UD3R ATX Intel Motherboard
CPU Intel Core i7-950 Bloomfield Quad-Core 3.06GHz LGA 1366 130W

The upgrades we are looking at:

Z97 Setup
SSD Crucial MX100 CT256MX100SSD1 2.5" 256GB SATA III MLC
COOLER Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO - CPU Cooler with 120 mm PWM Fan
CPU Intel Core i7-4790K Haswell Quad-Core 4.0GHz LGA 1150
MOBO ASRock Z97 Extreme6 LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX
opt.I GIGABYTE GA-Z97X-UD5H LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX
opt.II ASUS Z97-PRO LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX

+ Eventually a new graphic card some GeForce GTX 760 (since the Z97 Setup would be cheaper)

X99 Setup
SSD Crucial MX100 CT256MX100SSD1 2.5" 256GB SATA III MLC
COOLER Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO - CPU Cooler with 120 mm PWM Fan
CPU Intel Core i7-5820K Haswell-E 6-Core 3.3GHz LGA 2011-v3 140W
MOBO ASRock X99 Extreme3 LGA 2011-v3 Intel X99 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX
RAM G.SKILL Ripjaws 4 series 16GB (4 x 4GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 2666 (PC4-21300) Desktop Memory Model F4-2666C15Q-16GRR

I am only able to set components up but not really rating them in regard of their performance or compatibility so i would really appreciate any input of you guys.

Thank you very much!

Hi Erratic,

I would like to add a word to help in build of PC. Here are some options for you.

CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor.
Motherboard: MSI Z97-Gaming 9 AC ATX LGA1150 Motherboard.
SSD: Crucial MX100 CT256MX100SSD1 2.5" 256GB SATA III MLC.
Case: NZXT Phantom 530 (Black) ATX Full Tower Case .
GPU: MSI GeForce GTX 760 2GB TWIN FROZR Video Card.

I believe these components are best for video editing and gaming. Also, this configuration allows for overclocking, as long as you have a stable power supply and a good case. In build, MOBO is support to SLI and CrossFire technology that means in future you can add-on a second GPU card for performance, instead of buying a new MOBO or replacing a totally new GPU. The GeForce GTX 760 2GB is better in terms of performance, mostly used for gaming and video editing; and high performer and stability in pixels and with that you can enjoy better graphics. I choose SSD as primary storage and WD Black as secondary storage because during system process, you’ll be constantly saving and rendering directly from the HDD. The SSD drive is fast to load the system and WD Black is a high performance drive that would give you best output. For case, you may check on NZXT 530 because your old case does not support front USB 3.0.

For better performance and for life of your system, you just add a good casing for PC and combine with a liquid cooling system on it.

Hope it helps.
