I currently have an AMD Phenom II 555 BE processor unlocked to function as a quad core cpu. I use it at stock settings.

I am planning to get a more powerful graphic card for gaming at a resolution of 1600x1024, 1920x1200. Would it be worth it to upgrade to the i3 2500k Sandybridge or will my cpu work just fine? If the unlocked 555 can last for another year that's enough for me.

psu: Corsair 450vx
motherboard: Biostar ta785ge 128m

it should be fine in quad mode.

Using it just like you, good processor:) hoping it would last for few more years

Depends what gpu you use.
5850/6870/460/470/6950 along those lines

Edit:

Yea, it's working fine, it's just that I'm a bit apprehensive about it performing well while gaming at higher resolutions and not holding back the gpu.

see dude an unlocked 555be performs equals 965be

matches clock to clock

so i'll suggest you to wait some time for bulldozer 6-8 cores

becoz there were only 10-20% increase in performence

better wait

I don't think your processor will bottleneck even one of the graphic cards available today. It is fast enough for any game you play on it. Moreover, the maximum resolution you can play at depends on the graphic card and very little on the processor. That's why when they benchmark processors in games, they always do it at lower resolutions because usually the graphic card becomes a bottleneck at higher resolutions.

Bulldozer will be slower than 2500K for gaming. Based on the cards you are going to use you should be fine just try to get 3600mhz or more.

Well, bying a new processor + a motherboard and then GPU can get costly.

Whereas if you buy a HD6850 range GPU, and game at 1920x1080 isn resolution, there won't be any issues.
