Hi gang,
I have an emerge 500 VA UPS running A64 3200+,8600gt,A8N-VM, 2GB DDR1, 1 HDD, 1 DVD R/W, printer/scanner/copier combo & 17" CRT.
Backup is basically low, maybe a minute max. But it doesn't affect me much, as my apartment has 1KVA backup, which kicks in within 20s.

If i upgrade , lets say to a quad core+9800GT+mobo+ddr3 ram+hdd+printer+VX 450, do I need to change my UPS?. Will the VX 450 blow up the UPS? I need basically just safe backup for like 30s, thats all. I can't buy a very good UPS(eg 650VA-1KVA), as my folks at home won't be able to run for eg the mixie, tv(42" plasma) etc, due to the 1KVA limit.
And power cuts are common in my area.

Any advice/solutions much appreciated.

Cheers
Vinny

Your 500VA UPS can handle a load of max 300watts when on battery (500/1.66=~300watts)

A quad core+9800GT+mobo+ddr3 ram+hdd will not reach 300W even on full load, so relax.

And even if in some odd scenario your UPS does get overloaded, it'll beep immediately and/or cut off the power to the PC and/or blow the fuse. Fuses are cheap :P

A UPS is designed to handle overload situations also, just like inverters. It will either beep or cut off its output when it occurs. So test it by running the powerful rig with it and then switching off the power supply to the UPS. Test it first at idle load and then at max load.

Well, ur UPS might not burn out, but may not handle the load of the PC in case of a power cut, in which case the whole purpose of keeping a UPS is wasted.

If u are buying a quad core and a decent graphics card, ur wattage will hover around 250-300 on load. And if you overclock, it might increase.

If u are going to use the PC for normal purposes, and no overclocking, then u can keep the 500VA and see if it handles full load.

Point to note:
If a UPS is 300W, it would be actually able to handle ~250-270W ideally. :cool2:

I have a CFT 500W psu currently with 27A on 12v. I am planning to go for a X4-620 + 9800GT/equivalent combination. Lets hope neither the PSU nor the UPS let me down :bleh:
Waiting for fermi to release, will be using mu 8600 GT for now.

When it gets overloaded it won't restart the pc i think it will bypass the Ac line directly to the pc after beeping. Now in this scenario when the Electricity goes than the backup won't kick in. But nothing should blow up...

Worst case, if it doesn't give me backup, ill upgrade to a 650 VA one.
Comp(650va) + tv(150-200va) + light/fans etc will still be less than the 1 kva max allowed. And as said earlier, I only need like 30s backup for the generator to kick in.
