Resently had very bad experience with electricity supply ......

lots of power cuttage :@ here.

now thinking that is their a way to modify an 600v ups to increase it's capacity.

like have a dead ups means battery is dead and by fault broke it's fuse :P

NOW DUE TO THIS POWER CUT***

IAM THINKINGOF CHANGING IT's BATTERY AND TRY TO FIND A FUSE TO :D

so my question is can Iadd a more powerfull battery to it or is their a way that can modd it which can give me good back up like 2hrs on my rig :P

not in the mood of spending 4.5 k on a new on :(

plz don't say buy a new one as family will kick my a** now if ask them for that :/

so now let the guide begin .

u can also tell if need to add any time of new curcuit to ups and am read to have battery out of the ups if it's a big one .

looks not so important :)

Re: Ups modding ^_^ qurey's

First which brand UPS you have.. If it's like intex, microteck, ..etc.. local brands then i like to add that.. Local UPS have a very poor quality transformar which get very hot when used as Step-UP... 600va transformer will run for about 15-20 min. in Step-up.. so running with more capacity battery for more then this will burn the transformer for sure...

You can try it ....You can add more capacity battary and just can get a good backup, but monitor transformer temperature..

i have the local brand which is Star-tech i think and that's why i am asking that if i need to add a circuit or what for more protection ??????

or is it possible to convert the ups itself to an inverter ;) if possible by some means :D

i read the first page of the link CA50 gave , pretty interesting to known that it's possible but again about the transformer , how to identify it :/

i will try tomorrow to open the ups as last time i tried it , the screw was tie like for ever :@

and i think that ventilation can be taken care of like same of what we do in case molding :D

and acrylic would be idle if i am not wrong :/

Sure, do you have an old electric pump lying around, a bicycle, and a good pair of legs?

Ain't nothing free in this world. It's possible, but will cost money. A lot.

Two hours backup on a single PC = about 10k or so for a 1500VA UPS. All UPS are made for between 7 and 20 minutes of backup at rated maximum load. So if you want 6 times the runtime, you have to have six times the capacity. For a regular home PC, that's 250 x 6 = 1500VA.

DIY is even more expensive. A car battery is needed for maximum runtime - even a local battery is about 2.5K, and then you've to hack into the UPS and make the connections.

@ cranky : what do u say about the link from CA50 ????

i do have a ups and as the battery is gone, i need to but one sooner naa and the rest is the only think costing like 200 bucks ???? don't u think that ????

and that's why i have started this thread so that expects like Rakesh Sharma can reply on the plan
:D

they have the experience in the molding case a lot so it makes sense if i am going for it and like this also sine wave inverter will cost me like 10 k ??? + right ????

and i think if its a learning process then my parents also will support me :D

A Maruti 800 car battery is at least 2.5k. Did you not read the link?

A UPS battery will not last 2.5 hours on a single charge at full load.

Or am I misunderstand what you want to do?

First if you dont have experience in electronics dont do it.. It's too dangerous.
Second Transformer are not cooled by passive air...cos it's the coil which gets heated up which is insulated so air will not reach inside the coil.. that's the reason heavy load transformer are cooled via OIL..

As transformer heats up it reduces the overall resistance of the coil... In step-up operation primary coil is powered with 12v and high amps switching via array of MOSFETs.. so at small voltage and high ampere change in resistance will put extra stress on MOSFETs and you can destroy them...

I have not seen the PCB board of the brand UPS you stated.. so dont know if it's having proper protection circuit or not..

Second issue you will face is the charging of high amp battery... with this UPS plus Car battery, you will always have partially charged battery.. this reduces battery life and your backup time too..

the guy from above link did add a extra charger for the charging and the were taking like 15 hrs for full charge-ups :)

and like this also, the battery also keeps on charging in the while when light is there :) and that don't damage the life of the battery - that's my thought plz tell truth if i am wrong :)

I am just thinking on the process and did not have started it due to the safety side :)

@ Rakesh Sharma : I all upload images on the UPS PCB Board so that u can have a look at it and can suggest what i can do or which part i should get checked up .
Its not like we have a heavy Light cut-age , it's just i planed to use it as an inverter for home with my PC , where there are 4 CFL of 100 watt and a table fan ;) and some times they have a power-cut for like 15 mins after every 30 mins if they are working on some problem .

INVERTER BUYING IS A WASTE OF MONEY - HERE AND I CAN ALWAYS USE THAT MONEY TO UPGRADE THE PC IF NEEDED :D

"INVERTER BUYING IS A WASTE OF MONEY - HERE AND I CAN ALWAYS USE THAT MONEY TO UPGRADE THE PC IF NEEDED"

Nah buddy you are wrong! I have a sine wave inverter setup for my gaming rig, it lasts for 5-6 hours for normal operations and 2-3 hours while gaming. Its from Microtek. :P

One small query from my side... can i connect two ups battery in series to get more backup ??
