Hi Guys!

Back here after a long time.

I have been using this APC UPS Back-Ups RS 550 and it has been giving me problems since the beginning.

I have this configuration for the past 2 years, everything is great, just not sure if this UPS was worth buying.

ComponentsName
ProcessorIntel Core i5 750 @ 2.67Ghz
MotherboardIntel DH55TC
RAMKingston 2GB x2
Hard-driveSeagate 500GB
Optical drive [DVD]LG
Graphics UnitNvidia GeForce GTS 250
MonitorSamsung 26"
CabinetCM
SMPSCM 500W
UPSAPC Back-Ups RS 550

Please tell me if I need a better and stronger UPS or there is something wrong with this particular model and I can get the battery replaced? It's currently out of warranty and I would be charged Rs 900 for it.

If I need a new one, then please suggest which one should I buy to avoid any problems in the future.

Thanks

what problems were you facing?
your ups can only handle max of 300W load for a few minutes (less than 5min) on full battery since it comes with a 7AH smf battery. with your config, i doubt it will give more than 7-8 mins of backup.
So how much backup time you require, and if you're open to buy a new ups, how much are you willing to spend? just let us know the max amount in your budget.

Thanks for replying 6pack.
The problem is that it has stopped giving me any backup now and gives a sudden continuous beep while the computer in ON. Even after charging it for the whole night, I don't get any backup.

Check to see if its overloaded. If not, seems like its battery is dying. A new 9AH battery would cost 800-850 if you get it yourself after exchanging your old battery with the shopkeeper. Dont buy from apc authorised shop since they dont take old battery back and will charge price of 9AH battery and give you 7AH battery. the battery is commonly available. you just have to take some time to search for it. 9AH battery is same size as that of 7AH and will give 4-5mins extra backup.

How do I check for overload?
APC has quoted 1200/- for new battery.

I have always been getting backup problems with this UPS and have replaced the model 3 times already when it was in Warranty period. Not sure whether to buy a new UPS or to replace the battery.

you dont need hardware guy to find out load on ups in watts. your ups comes with a usb cable to attach to pc and apc powerchute software. if you have installed the apc software it will show you load in watts in main window.
26inch samsung - is it a lcd tv or lcd monitor? if its a tv it will take about 120W load. lcd monitor otoh will take about 50W load. your cpu, hdd, etc would be max 180-200W in all.
