Hi folks,

Just wanted to know if there is any DVD player available in India that can upscale to 1080 via components.

I know there is this

NeoDigits | HELIOS Network High Definition Divx Streaming Media DVD Player

and Oppo OPDV971H

Does the Samsung DVD-HD860 upscale via component?

SAMSUNG's Digital World - Hype Vision | DVD-HD860

I was thinking of getting the Philips 29PT8836/94

29PT8836/94 Pixel Plus TV (conventional) TV Philips

But I am getting second thoughts with the HDTV part of it. Should I rather wait a few more months and wait for new products to launch and the LCD prices to drop? How well do the LCD TVs match up with the CRTs?

Thanks!

If you want a tv only for HD, better get a widescreen. The HD crt tv you mentioned is pretty good and would easily beat an lcd when it comes to color reproduction but it's still not widescreen which means there is a lot of imformation not being presented to you since it has 4:3 aspect ratio and HD contents are always in widescreen. So there will always be some loss of data when you view widescreen content on a non-widescreen tv. Philips do sell a widescreen 32 inch crt model.Check out if that's available in india or you are better off getting one of those lcds that does 720p.1080p support is great but if i have to choose between a widescreen that only does 720p and a 1080p display with 4:3 aspect ratio i would stick with the 720p display.

Now coming to the second part, i don't think that player can upscale to 1080p via component. It can do that only via HDMI. The only device available in india (that i know of ) that can upscale dvds via component is the xbox360.

The Samsung DVD player....

Does that convert regular DVDs to HD ?? I dont think so, but advice would be appreciated.

And if it does not do that, then it means, it plays regular HD stuff.... where do I get High Definition DVDs ??

Or is my only option to download HD movies from the net and burn a DVD-Video and play them ??

@Doc Holiday --- Sorry for asking questions in your thread, but I have had such doubts for ages....just been too lazy to make a new thread :P

Hope you dont mind :)

Well, I don't want my TV only for HD, but surely by the way things are going that seems to be the future and I don't think I am going to buy TVs every year or two. I have a Samsung 940BW for my PC and I enjoy watching movies on them - widescreen is really the thing for movies and HD. Problem is budget - I think with a budget (below 25K), this TV seems to be a good buy - but only if - if - one could get a DVD player like the Oppo that could upscale DVDs to 1080; it would make the buy "complete." Of course, as and when we are into HD-DVD, I am sure it will be time to buy another TV and possibly there will be HDTV2? With an even higher resolution? Who knows.

The Xbox, does it upscale all output via component? Or only for games?
