I tried to restore my ipod touch using itunes , using shift + restore button , then I got error 20 , then I tried in dfu mode , pressed , home + power button for 10 seconds , released power button on 11th second , continued pressing home button till itunes recognized ipod in recovery mode... Hope its the right way to get in to dfu mode... But when I try to restore then.. I am getting error 1601

^Try it on another PC with the recent version of iTunes installed. Works most of the times. :)

I am not getting the white screened mentioned in many tutorials while getting in to DFU mode... the way in which i get in to DFU mode is rite? how to know that the ipod is in DFU mode...?

^^ yup doing it in the right way... i am getting the black screen... if i am doing it wrong i wud have got apple logo screen rite?

reinstalled itunes to latest version... still the same...:-(

For Error 1601: Error 1601 or 1602 when restoring iPhone or iPod touch in iTunes

The issue is most probably due to You trying to downgrade your firmware... Is it the case ?? Or u'r getting it while trying to restore the same firmware that is already in ipod...
If u'r trying to downgrade ( 3.0 to 2.0 ) , I think you cannot do it... Try reinstalling itunes in ur comp... I mean... Remove Itunes.. reboot... install itunes.... restore....

i first tried to restore the same firmware my ipod had , it failed and then i allowed the itunes( ver 9.2) to download and install the latest firmware automatically ie download and restore option... but both gave me same result :-(

press the home button and then connect it to pc while holding it, u will see ipod in recovery mode then.

okkk i know about that error u are gating i can help u whit that but first of all u have to tell me witch generation ipod u are using and what was the last ipod os u was using

if it is a 1 or 2 gen then u don't have to put it in DFU mod to restore it. just connect it to your pc while keep holding the home key will put u in restore mod

and if u really want to put it in dfu mod then use this video to do this in right way YouTube - How to Put Your iPod into DFU Mode

you are getting the error because you are using a custom firmware file, just update to the latest firmware using itunes and then jailbreak with spirit.

okkk if you are using ver 3.1.1 then you can still update it to 3.1.2 now it's what u have to do first download firmware ver 3.1.2 from this link iPod, iPhone and iPad Firmware Download then plug you ipod wile holding home key you i pod will boot in restore mod now hit restore in itune wile holding shift key on you computer keyboard a new window will pop up now dreg it to the firmware file u had downloaded that will be some thing like iPod2,1_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.ipsw now let itune do its job if every thing went fine then your i pod will be up and runing in no time if u still get that error then there is one more thing you can do but first try this if it still doesn't work then we will try the 2 way to restore a ipod
