E5200 - 3.5k
ASUS P5K-PL VM/CM - 2.5k or Gigabyte G31M-S2L - 2.4k(Former is better in OC IMO)
2GB Transcend 800MHz - 1.2k
WD320GB AAKS - 2.5k
9600GT - 6k / or get a 8800GS(4.2k) from jacksdowan here in TE..beats 96GT :D

Total 15.7k... :D

E7400-6k

Gigabyte G31S2L-2.4k

HDD 7200.12 500GB-2.9k

GPU HD 4670-4.4k

Transcend 2*2GB-2.3k

This will exceed your budget but a better choice than E5200&WD 320GB...

get gigabyte g31 + e5200 + 500gb seagate .12 + 4670

well, a lil gaming n general stuff.. am wondering that e5200 is a dual core cpu n not c2d.. how much will it fall behind the e7400? also the os will be 32 bit xp pro.. so don't think 4gb is of much use over 2gb.. and the power supply is a 550W one with 14A on the 12V rail.. some unbranded psu..

yes , his card is overpriced also , no warranty ,8800gs = renamed to 9600gso and only 384mb vram.

even 4670 beats 9600gso , 9600gt is much faster .

Change your PSU first...get CM460W..

chk this link though no E7400 but it should perform much better than E5200...

iXBT Labs - Intel Pentium E5200 Processor - Page 1: Introduction, testbed

E5200 - 3.5k

Gigabyte G31M-S2L - 2.5k

22GB Transcend 800MHz - 1k

Seagate 7200.12 ST3500418AS 500GB - 3k

9600GT - 6k

Total - 16k

be sure you have at least a CM 460W (2.2k) or Corsair CX400W (3k) Power Supply

Yup, even i too think abt getting that card but finally backed out from the deal.. Will get 4850 or GTS250 within a month...Saving for it...

ok.. so i'll keep this as the final config?

E7400-6k

Gigabyte G31S2L-2.4k

HDD 7200.12 500GB-2.9k

GPU HD 4670-4.4k

Transcend 2GB 800Mhz - 1k

Moreover i forgot to mention, its for a friend and overclocking is out of the question.. so everything will be kept at stock!

4 GB RAM is gonna be wasted since the OS is gonna be 32-bit. I think he shud cut down on the proccy and get a better PSU.

PSU is waaay underrated over here ( in India I mean ). Everyone thinks they will do fine with a cheapo Rs. 600 PSU and then wonder why their system keeps slowing down in the evenings or occasionally freezing up for no reason .. or harddisks crashing .. etc.

Actually, there are 9600GSO's with 768 MB available that are much faster than the 4670, and OC editions keep up with standard 9600GTs. Also, the 8800GS/9600GSO's are very very nice overclockers, with a 25% increase easily possible. Just like to clarify im talking about the original G92 based ones, the rest nvidia released later on are crap.

@TS
Build your config around E5200+G31 CPU/Mobo combination, don't spend more than this on the above. There are some good suggestions in this thread :)

alrite.. assembled the comp y'day n installed os successfully.. friend calls me up and complains of the same "switching off on its own" randomly.. :(

the psu is quite new actually.. and i haven't bought the graphics card yet.. so the config is

e7400, g31m-s2l, 2gb 800mhz, and seagate 7200.12 500gb, samsung dvd-rw. no other components are connected to the computer....
