Had been to bh photo video in NYC today. DT 880 pro is not in stock. Only against special order.

HD 600 and DT 880 (semi open not pro) is available. So is Grado 325i.

Prices are 273, 259, 295 respectively.

The HD 595 is available for 260$.

That salesman was kind enough to open an HD600 and DT880 and allowed me to test with Zune. I know it isnt meant to be used with the Zune, but gave it a shot nevertheless. I plan on using it mainly through the headphone out which comes with my Cambridge soundworks 5.1 550 set. Or connect it to the X-Fi directly.

The problem with both headphones with the Zune was that it was not loud enough even at max volume. Will it be ok with my X-fi? Do I need a headphone amp? If so, recommend a cheap one if I can bring back from here.

I do need a little bit of bass. I need comfort too.

Need to know quickly as I need to buy in a day or two.

YES you need a headamp with those headphones :P otherwise its a wasted investment

dont have an x-fi . . .But my juli@ card manual says to connect only high impedence phones and not low ones. . .

can u tell your budget...HD 595 for 260 $( if u mean USD ) is not worth at all.....

if your look for a good headphone for music and movies and even gaming, consider the AD900 200 $, works the best unamped too, if your looking at a lower budget, consider the AD700 or Grados SR 60

I bought the Grado SR325i. Sounds damn good with my dad's laptop and compressed lossy MP3s. Cant wait to come back home and try it with my X-Fi.

Main reason for going with this was because Grados are good even unamped. My heart though wants an HD 600. Mainly due to the fit and finish and the attention to detail. But I know that I wont be doing justice to it if I use it unamped.

the Grados are not that great unamped.

sell ur X-Fi, buy a DAC, and see the quality increase by a HUGE amount.

the AD series is the best series of unamped headphones, but I wish you could have got that dt880 pro, they are simply godlike :)

^^ No need to sell his X-fi. He can buy a decent USB DAC for $69 and plug it into his computer when he wants to listen to music and then remove it when he wants to play games with EAX.

You do do need a headphone amp to make the DT 880 work to its full potensial .. Buying any cheap one wont make that much of a difference simply because they wont be able to drive it .. U can try Xins super mini second hand from US thorugh the head-fi forums market section .. In fact i wud recommend you to buy some good ones second hand ..

Too late to buy anything more in the US. Am leaving from here tomorrow.

Can you give me some good suggestions in India?

^^ No half decent amps for the Grados are available in India. But they are 32 ohm headphones and hence easily driven. You can safely use it for a couple of months and then add a good amp later on since you wont be missing that much hearing them sans an amp.

within a budget of 100$ any DAC/amp you will suggest for something like AD700 which is presently driven by Auzentech Xplosion. And do you think there would be any noticeable difference that will justify the additional price????

One thing for sure is that the Grados dont draw as much power from the Zune as the old Sennies CX400s. I've used the Zune almost continuously from EWR - FRA - BLR and the battery indicator is still showing half. With the CX400, it would have been dead long back.

^^ Yes and the HD600 will sound like ordinary headphones without a powerful amp to drive them. The 300 ohm monster is very dependent on the quality of audio (you require lossless audio to get the best out of them) and the quality of the amp (so add an expensive amp to the mix).

The Grados however are all of 32 ohms and will sound only marginally better with an amp (the amp can be added to change the sound signature if people find the Grados too aggressive). However take care since the Grados are detailed headphones and they will rip badly encoded tracks to shreds.

@thebaink - The A700 does not really need an amp. But do get this - DAC DESTROYER [DAC DESTROYER] - $85.00 : Zen Cart!, The Art of E-commerce

Its a DAC cum amp. It will drive your A700 with ease and will improve the SQ of the A700. So plug it in when you want to listen to music and then remove it when you want to play games. The DAC requires no drivers and when you remove it your existing sound card automatically becomes the primary sound driver so its very easy to use.
