Hi,
I am using Vista home premium on my HP laptop. The problem I am facing is that whenever I connect any USB mass storage devices like

1) My motorola phone
2) ipod
3 ) ANY other thumb drive
4)N95

It is just not getting detected by my laptop/OS.... The ipod shows charging status, but under "My computer" it is not visible as an USB drive.. Itunes also doesnt detect the ipod.... I am confused, as it was working well just yesterday.......

I have checked device manager, all usb ports seem to be working properly.... I just cannot figure out the reason why this is happening....

did u install any update / patch ? ........any new software ? that u think might have cause this ? / disable / uninstall the same and check.....do u receive any error msg like the usb is not detected or anything like that ?

No error message recieved , But I tried to Install "Cygwin" yesterday....... according to removal procedures I deleted the folder C:\cygwin

I recieve no error message... It just doesnt get recognised... Strangely The usb mouse, keyboard work fine... The ipod/phone are also getting charged, they are just not showing up...

Check if the following registry settings:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\USBSTOR\Start

The value should be "3" over here. If its set to "4", USB Mass Storage devices are disabled.

i had the same prob. vista could not detect my ipod even though itunes was well installed. the ipod would charge but nothing more.

Thanks For all your help guys! The issue was resolved...
What I did was
0)Remove all USB devices

1) Goto the device manager and see there will be some thing called "USB hub " (Not USB controllers)

2) Right click on all "USB HUBS" and disable them.

3)Then just restart PC and again go and enable them. Restart again

4) The mass storage devices will start getting recognised...
