^ you're reasoning is weird. If USA feels, 30k wage for a maid is low, why don't they increase the wages of their embassy support staff here who are getting far less than that? Minimum wage here or there does not make difference because for them anyone employed with their embassy is one of their people temporarily. Just because USA has a minimum wage policy does not mean other countries should follow suit. Their minimum amount and some other countries minimum amount will always differ. That does not give them the right to shove their hard assed rules on other countries embassies. :|

Because 30k is enough to live off in India but not the US where goods are priced much higher than here. Is that really difficult to comprehend?

Let me make this simple. According to the Indian government, getting 8/9/10k is sufficient to live in Delhi but according to the US government, 30k is NOT sufficient to live in New York. You know, because items have different prices in different countries.

Well they arrested Devyani over the same issue of underpaying her maid. So if its such a big of an issue for them there, surely they should arrest all their staff here who have willfully underpaid their maids, cooks and drivers.
You are barking at the wrong tree. Indian government should protect labourers in India from such shams, not the other way around.

US embassies are legally considered to be US soil. so are indians working there being paid as per US law wrt minimum wages? i doubt it

thats why the Indian govt has asked for those details which will embarrass US when they are revealed & expose their double standards. but then some will say "gullible" americans were conned by "shrewd" indians into paying them less ;)

An US embassy in Indian soil isn't US territory; it is still subjected to Indian laws. The confusion here arises due to diplomatic immunity, because of which the local government cannot enter the embassy premises nor arrest the diplomats working there. For that they have to take the permission of the Ambassador.

She's a live-in, all her expenses including food, medical & board are covered.

Here's the thing, the maid agreed to the terms of employment. Later she finds that she wants more money. The employer refused. Employer then tries to sack her. Maid absconds and gets her employer into trouble.

As far as i'm concerned the employer can be charged and tried with whatever but she never gets to serve her sentence.

That would be a satisfactory conclusion to this saga.

next time people take maids over from India, just ensure they have enough leverage over the maid and her family so this sort of crap does not happen.

India is fully asserting that the maid's salary was confused on the form which was read by the US team.

Considering the levels of impoverishment in India, I am sure I can find people who'd be willing to work even for 3-4k INR a month as well and then make them sign a contract and take them to the US. That doesn't make it okay.

more than the desire to extract some more money from the indian govt. (which was paying the maid), it seems more to be the desire to 'settle' there, taking note of the pages from the maid's diary, her sudden disappearance, and how further events unfolded themselves, which is why the 'immigrant-settler lobby' is being hinted at and said to be active behind the scenes in this case as well, and why the whole case is being termed as a 'conspiracy' (a 'democrats-play/ploy').

She is all ready being treated as an asylum attendee or war-victim or someone subjugated to extreme prejudice and racial profiling. LOL. All in all, end of the day: one domestic staff (I cannot say servant anymore to be PC) took two nations for a jolly-gumption ride. And in tandem had her family flown out: aka -- US Marine extraction style. It hardly matters anymore that a diplomat was tried and the so-called Vienna rules (or what ever) were not protocol de facto..! India has gone on record that the salary was misread and the case was "built up" on this basis. It shows there was an agenda. What rule did US of A follow, when they extradited her family...? America will never cease to show-case their hypocrisy. They are intervening in most world-matters and now: Also within India's domestic squabbles. Are they not happy counting their coffins from Afghanistan and soon to be -from- Iraq.

not responding to the GOI's communication with the USG since July, 2013 (i can't recall what the one-sided correspondence was exactly on; the USG replied only once, a very brief and a sort of hazy reply, more like finally replying for the sake of just replying as doing some favour to a persistent asker, at the end, is what i remember), plus, (deliberately) confusing employer and employee on the visa form, etc., tells that the democrats-agencies needed a bait, and what better than targeting a State that would only mew back at their act?! but they misjudged, got a growl instead and the back-pressure becomes tough to handle for them!

Try it but i doubt you will be successful. But if you offered them 5-6 times that things will be different. Why go all the way to the US to earn what you can make in India.

Now ask yourself in what profession do you get a 5-6x bump in Indian salary just by going to the US.

Many would. I am sure. Many consider India a s***-hole anyways, and just want to get out. Even if they are hand-2-mouth, abroad.

Devyani is a heiress of a powerful government official, owns just under a dozen properties, resides in an apartment in the US that she doesn't even pay for and on top of that is paid a handsome salary by the GOI in USD. Forget other Indian diplomats, i doubt if even children of the wealthiest Indians can boast of a similar jet-setting lifestyle.

Still wondering why many Indians consider our country a sh**-hole?

Is she committing any crime by owning property and being wealthy..? Is getting a handsome salary an issue..?

You really do not know, why many consider India what it is..? LOL.

your point ?

Well the Khobragade's are involved in the Adarsh scam. Being wealthy isn't a crime. But acquiring wealth unethically and illegally certainly is. My earlier post is about why we Indians self-flagellate and not about the Devyani case.

True, her name has come up in the Adarsh scam, but that is also under investigation...! How is her accumulating a corpus illegally got anything to do with the false allegations which have been vindicated on here regarding her domestic help.

Regarding self-criticism and as per you "flogging" ; I am at a loss of words if you do not have foresight for the current situation of India with respect to various factors and why it is called a s***-hole.

You've suggested that most people would only go to the US only if they were offered 5-6 times their pay in India. Why would anyone give up an opportunity to visit another country and experience another culture for the same pay? And in Sangeetha's case she also saw an opportunity to lead a lifestyle far far better than in India. Although not as extravagant as Devyani's, Sangeetha's new lifestyle will be a massive improvement; especially for someone hailing from the servant class.

Yes, she will have a better lifestyle. Which she has acquired through graft and falsification. She is just as much criminal as her employer, if she is..!

Oh come on now!! One would think that our GOI would be the first to openly claim something this baseless. Instead you do?!?

And its so much easier to believe a Foreign Govt. over your own RIGHT !!.. and there is actual an basis to this claim , Sangeeta colluded with Devyani to lie to Immigration and submit the false documents.
Sangeeta was the one who gave false information (as alleged by the State Dept.) .. how is she now equally accountable for the crimes Devyani is charged with.

Let me repeat myself again, my last 2 posts are responses to why some, if not all, Indians deride our nation. It has nothing to do with the case itself.
How is she deriding our nation..? I am not sure what you are even saying, here.

When Devyani returns to India all investigations into the Adarsh scam will most likely be indefinitely suspended. And when that happens the same Indians who supported Devyani's return will start to self-flagellate. This isn't hypocrisy. Its lunacy. Unless pulling of scams is part of their job description, civil/government servants should serve the public with the best interests of the nation at heart.
Why will the proceedings for the investigation be suspended when she steps in. It is a full blown case..? I do not get the logic here..? I fail to understand your logic, again, Sid_Donnydarko..! Pulling off scams is not their JD. What the heck.

Since you make yourself out to be the foremost authority on the subject of India's future, kindly enlighten all of us by substantiating your opinion with atleast one paramount factor instead of resorting to browbeating.
You really do not know why India is called 3rd world, and a s***-hole..? See the corruption and the rampant bad-practices we have here. See the societal mechanisms (forced marriage, rape get-away, no inheritance for females, religious hyper ventilation, political manipulations of the masses). See our education system. I am not even a minor authority on all this, but state what the general populace feels. I am not browbeating, but you are not understanding basic concepts.

Did I not post a link: were it is clearly stated, that the amount of her "said" salary was read incorrect by the US authorities. Why is she still holding her stand. She wants to get US sovereignty on the basis of a pretext of falsification by her employer, and creating a stigma of ill-handling by the same.
