oh guys .. got a big problem here now..
i got a samsung ide 80gb hard disk in a ide-usb casing.... it was wokring fine.. until a few days ago.. but all of a sudden "the mass storage device" is not being recognized ..
the problem is that i get an error "the usb device malfunctioned blah blah blah " ya i got USB 2.0 ports..
when i disable the enhanced usb controller.. i can use the hard disk on usb 1.1 speeds.. but thats too slow for all the huge files i have to transfer everyday..

i have tried a few things stated on quite a few forums i have visited today but nothing has helped me.... :S :S
things i tried include.... uninstalling the usb drivers --restart -- reinstall again.. didn`t work..
one more was to shut down the pc , remove the plug - and switch it back on after 30 odd min.. still didnt work...

now do i need to repair my installation??? cause there is no way i can format and install everything. its really pain...
b4 it was had a FAT32c file system... and i formatted into a NTFS filesystem .. still no luck :(

what else can i try??
been chking the microsoft newsgroups. but still not luck....
what to do...

1.Check in device manager properties, power management tab and uncheck the box to allow xp to control the usb device.

2.Check Device Manager to see if have Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller. If so, then disable this (by right-clicking)

3.If it displays the device as an unknown device...then troubleshoot through these pts from a Brilliant guide USB Device Troubleshootingfrom HP
If the device displays as an unknown device, check the following items:
1. If the USB device is connected to a USB port on a port replicator, unplug it and plug it into a USB port on the notebook.
2. The device may not be getting enough power. If other USB devices are connected to the system, remove all other USB devices (except keyboard and mouse) and restart the computer. Check Device Manager again. If this solves the issue, use a powered USB hub to power more devices.
3. Disconnect the USB device, close any software for the device that may be open, uninstall the USB device software driver, and then reinstall the device software driver.
...
the manual also discusses these issues :
-USB devices are detected by the computer but are not working properly
-USB device not detected by the computer
-Error message: Activation failure of BIOS USB
(check out the hp manual in the link above.)

4.Download a USB info utility like USB Info and test your USB to explore, and test the performance of your USB devices including related devices such as USB drives.
You can determine if your USB devices are really 2.0 or not and test how fast (or slow) they are. The software offers the topology tree view of all your USB and related devices along with the other views. And with its built-in links to USB device registry entries and views, it can help you an easy troubleshooting of your USB devices and installations.
you can also try Computer Profiler v2.5.1 from Karenware.

5.Get the following older files from an older xp system.
Keep backups for the present files anyway.
.(Storage volumes\\Generic volume)
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\volsnap.sys
File version 5.1.2600.218
File date 26/10/2001

(USB Mass Storage Device)
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\usbstor.sys
File version 5.1.2600.218
File date 1/7/2001

Hi Bosky;
there is another problem though.Even though it does work, its too slow.Doesnt diabling Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller means turning off USB 2.0?I am happy it works but sad tht its too slow:(

^same problem here.

altough the speeds of external storage devices from the 2.0 & 1.1 were not tat noticable..

Does the mobo not support the 2.0 to the cabinet ports?..or are the local cabinet low speed?

It is not the cabinet ports....it is a software problem....

The sp1 or sp2 has the usb drivers.....because of this there is no driver support from Nvidia ......if yes there is then somebody please post the link of the same...

I use a "noname brand" probably made in china. Its better than many costly ones. But heard everest is a good brand though never seent hem around:d
If u decide to buy go for aluminium casing ones and try from the shop itself. As heard from vendor most of those are damaged by transport.

I changed mine yesterday and it works fine. There are many similar stories in techrepublic.Reading through those could give much better troubleshooting tips:hap2:

I am also using a no-name brand case.
I tried the hdd in a diff case , but was not able to access the data..
i guess i need to try and use data recovery tools...
do u guys have any suggestions.

i have 500Gb WD external HDD..PC config core 2 quad 2.6Ghz wit Intel DG41RQ...PC hangs when HDD connected...OS Win XP SP2..will be trying by installing SP3...my quite older laptop detects it with no dificulty on SP2....
