Hi,

Funny issue here. My USB ports seem to be turning on/off by themselves every 30 odd seconds. My mouse works perfectly well, but my portable HDD and DVD drive keep disconnecting....any ideas?

Have checked the device manager and turned all USB power options to off, so it wont turn off to save power. Also all devices seem to be proper from driver point of view...

^^ is it the front panal one or the ones at the rear ?? If it is the front panel one, then it might be due to loose connection at the mobo end

Can it be because of some loose cables to your USB devices. Check with a different OS just to make sure that this is some some hardware issue and not some software bugs or something

Sure try using those devices from linux, and don't install now. If it works perfectly under linux, then uninstall the USB (things, forgot the actual terms) from device manager and reinstall those again, that might do the trick :)

Just remove the devices from device manager, and let the driver auto-install next time you plug them in. Should solve it.

Tried that as well, the problem is that it reinstalls all USB root and hubs immediately when I uninstall them.

My system is rather unusual.

It sometimes gives sound of usb device been unplugged even though i havent connected any. It happens in xp only. I guess xp likes & misses usb devices so much that it wont let them go...n in this way keeps us reminding that it needs one to be plugged. :P

I have no idea abt linux...so not going down that road as of now. I have a new drive coming in today and had to reinstall windows anyway, so will do it once and for all. Also any idea where steam downloads updates to games?

Are you using the same cable for both the drives, this used to happen to my external hdd because of a faulty USB cable.

Well, tried the same cables on another computer and it works...looks like my Windows is totally screwed up for now. Will report back after a fresh install. I backed up my games on steam...now how do i reinstall them without having to download a huge amount? These are Physical DVD games, with updates.

As per my experience, its not a software issue. But rather a hardware issue.

What's your motherboard model and age?

I suspect the ports on the motherboard aren't giving enough power to the USB drives.

Soln 1: You can try removing all USBs and then just connect the desired USB drive. Will work slightly better than before as the USB drive gets more power.

Soln 2: Use the Y cable for the USB drive, and plug both power+data USB into the PC. If the USB drive still doesnt get enough power to run without errors/disconnections, then plug the power-extractor USB of the Y cable into a wall socket via a USB charger. While connecting the Data-USB of the Y cable to the PC.

The USB having more contactlines is usually the Data-USB.

It might be your motherboard too.How old is it?Try cleaning the carbon. And test it with a multimeter if possible. And what PSU are you using?

You are not going to believe this. I was using an extension for my 24 pin and thats whats turned out to be faulty....
