Since we already have a s/w thread for Symbian OS phones, why not one for Windows Mobile too?
Of the bunches of software I have tried, here are what I felt are the most useful for me...
Most of the apps listed below are freeware.
Why so? Because,
System Tools

I'm not much of a fan of games on PPC but who can say no to good ol' Marion or Contra on their phone? :cool2:
Of the several NES emulator avialable for the WM platform, I found this one to be the best with consitent 50+ fps and the ability to freel add/edit harware button mapping
Please do add more decent games to the list above
Internet
GPS
MultiMedia
Rather short list since I don't feel anyone would need any other app beyond these three:

What good all these apps if you can't launch your desired apps quickly and easily straight from the today screen without so much as whipping out your stylus?

Most of the apps listed below are freeware.
Why so? Because,
- A: they are free
- B: On the WM platform, I have noticed that the good freeware apps tend to be far less memory and resource intensive than their paid counterparts
System Tools
- Task Manager
Considering it is a Windows Mobile we are talking about, are memory leaks, program crashes and system hang all that surprising..Not really..right?
Which is why any self respecting WM user needs to have a good task manager and application switcher on the phone
This one is what I like the most because of its small memory footprint and the sheer amount of features it offers.Other good options are

The default file explorer on WM leaves a lot to be desired

Simple, effective and free:

Internet
- Internet Explorer Add-ins
- Wireless sniffer
- Putty
Life saver for me, maybe not as useful for others...http://www.pocketputty.net/download.html
GPS
- India Map Apps
As expcted, no free lunch on this one. YOur choices are:
- Destinator (Satguide) - Intuitive and very usable app (Destinator) with OK Maps but let down greatly by bad POI (Points of interest) listing
- Map My India - Marginally more accurate map than the former and the POI info is far better
However, the underlying app (NavMate) is shi$$y for lack of a better word. Buggy and difficult to use.
- GPS info and track logging
