hi
due to some virus, my home lappy is not working
I am only able to boot into "safe mode with command prompt"
can I use a ext. HDD in this mode to copy data from my lappy to it ?

Try to boot of a CD and use a dos based file system.

The best thing to do is download ultimate boot cd and then boot of that and save your data. The Command Prompt method in safe mode may not copy all the files, it sometimes has problems with how deep the folders are and how long the file name is so boot cd method is best way to go.

You can try the Command Prompt method first and then check if all files are copied properly, using xcopy command in Command Prompt. Go to RUN and type cmd and then the command.

If making a backup of all your data in the laptop is your first priority (as it should be), boot with a live Linux CD and access your hard drive and copy all the data to your external HDD.
