I have a LiteOn DVD writer lying at my home. I have two netbooks without any optical drive so instead of buying an external DVD writer i am thinking if there is a way to use my internal DVD writer to functional as a external one to use with my laptop.

How can i do this ???

Get a 5.25" external casing for optical drives. You should get one for about 800 to 900 bucks. Install the optical drive in this casing, and you are good to go.

You can use a SATA to USB converter card or the front panel of your SATA HDD csaing to connect the DVD writer to the USB port of your Netbook temporarily - but I don't think any proper casing is available for that.

Just saw the HP-India's post - get a casing for optical drive then.

The drive is quiet old (about 2-3 years old) and supposedly an IDE one.

@Hp-India

The ebay link that you have mentioned seems to be the best bet for me. Do you think this price is good what is mentioned there ???

Also i may have connect my old computer HDD (IDE) also to take backup of all my data. This case should work for the same too right ???

^^ The IDE drive would most definitely work. Prices are just as expected.. Probably you could save about 100 rs if you use some coupons. Opt for the cheapest one available, 'coz there'll be not much difference between them and the branded ones from techcom or any other company.

There seems to be many things there and that is making me bit confused. I am not considering all those which mention external casing for 3.5" HDD. Can you also help me in finding a few links from ebay which will be best for my use ???

The earlier link you gave was bit pricey. This last one looks good and under Rs 800. But i suppose there is no mention of what all is included inside and such details.

Others i found are these

eBay India: 5.25 Casing for IDE CD-RW DVD-RW Branded NOVAT SVB-0079 (item 350299533848 end time 07-Jan-2010 16:56:21 IST)

eBay India: 5.25'' USB 2.0 Enclosure Case CD-ROM, RW, DVD Casing (item 350135509371 end time 28-Jan-2010 13:03:00 IST)

What say ???

Considering shipping charged they all come out to be similarly priced.

Ok Guys, one of my friends here has a 15% off coupon so i would be buying from ebay. Please suggest which one will be the best for me from the above listed ones ??

My requirement is to get a casing to use my internal DVD writer as an external one. It would be also great if the same can be used to connected the internal HDD instead in the dvd writer. Both are IDE.

Goto lamington and buy a Zippy ka 3.5" IDE/SATA Case. Connect ur CDROM to this use, and whenever u want u can swap it with a HDD.

Best part part is it costs like 400-500 bux at Lamington and supports both IDE and SATA. So no support issues and u can connect any SATA/IDE Disks/CD/DVD etc

But how will a 5.25" optical drive fit inside a 3.5" casing?

Just 300 huh? Which store did u get it from? Wonder whats its price is there right now. That seems a good product as it supports 2.5 IDEs too!
