hi! guys..!!! :)

i have MTNL nights unlimited plan 256 Kbps where i get aroung 100-120 kbps during downloads ..but when i use utorrent i get around 60-80 kbps ..and the utorrent status bar displays ..no incomming connection. and it asked me to forward my port and took me to a site PortForward.com - Free Help Setting up Your Router or Firewall and there i was advised to make my ip static..

now my query are ..

1. can i make my IP static coz i have a dynamic IP from MTNL...?
2. would it solve my problem..?
3. is it legal...?
4. is it an advantage or disadvantage..?
thanks in advance ..:)

ip is assigned by mtnl, so u cannot make it static. u hv to pay extra if u want static ip.

port forwarding is esential to get maximum speed frm torrents.

u can do port forwading frm ur end, its a simple process and its absolutely legal.

i hv dlink 502t and i hv successfully done it.

What this means is that you should have the router, assign your computer a static ip, and then port forward, but this is not always necessary.

Do you have any other devices between your modem and the internet or between you router and the modem? If not, port forwarding should be fairly simple.

For basic port forwarding (without assigning static ip) You will need to access your router firmware page, you will have to look up how to do that in their the manual, but usually all you need to do is open up a web page and navigate to a specific ip address that your router uses.

here is a basic and common setup for a lot of computers, to help you understand port forwarding.

Your isp assigns you an ip address .. for example we will say 12.12.12.12 which is picked up by your modem.

Your modem uses dhcp to assign your router an ip address, for example 192.168.1.11.

Your router uses dhcp to assign your computer an ip address for example 192.168.1.5

Now... when you are sharing a file on a p2p program ... for example on port 2989 you need to be able to share that file from the correct ip and port.

The person on the internet, sharing the file with you can only see the ip address directly connected to the internet, which in this case is 12.12.12.12

So what we need to be able to do is re-route all requests on port 2989 from ip address 12.12.12.12 to port 2989 on 192.168.1.5.

This is what port forwarding does, your router tells all incoming requests on that specific port number to open up that port, and to send them to your computer ip.

So when you are looking at your router port forwarding page, you will need to input the port number from utorrent setup to forward, then the ip address to forward the request to.

In a dos/cmd window type ipconfig, this will tell you the ip address of your computer.

(If your router needs a port range and you are using only one port then the range in this case would be 2989 to 2989)

Voila... this should do the trick. :hap2:

thx sujit801,sunilyo and pixelpusher...:)

i went to the site again and found my ADSL MODEM which was UT300R2U and got my port forwarded by following the instruction..

but in no way negating or disregarding the promp help of you guys...abig thx!
:hap2:
Thank you guys!

staic ip has many problem

if u os systems crash then u have u create staic ip again :P cause forgot ip address

so dynamic ip are better for using max port download ;)

Actually this is not correct, the static ip is being assigned by the router to the computer. The computer still uses dhcp to receive the ip address, the only difference is that the router always assigns the same ip address to the computer... therefore.. a static ip. :)

This is why you need to assign a static ip :)

What router are you using, I will try and check it out and see what you need to do to setup a static ip in your router. PM me with info :D
