uTorrent strange speed problems.

Hey folks

Around 1 month back my net just dropped dead. I was in Win 7 at that time. I called up my exchange and they said they would verify as soon as possible. After three days and without any response from them. I installed Windows XP (don't ask me why i just did thinking it might be an OS problem).

Even then the connection problem persisted. The error it gave was Error : 651. I searched around in the internet and came to know that this can be rectified if BSNL reset my port. And i went to their office and complained , invariably they reset the port on the same day. Voila the Internet works.

Now i installed Windows 7 from a USB drive, and a strange thing happened, after installation one of my drives didnt show up. I went into the Disk Management and the drive was there without any Drive Letter i assigned one and its back on my computer. I dunno if its relevant to this but i still think its better to mention it.

The Problem: When i download using Flashget or Firefox i get speeds upto 55KBps, but when i use utorrent the speeds are stuck at 35-45 no matter the seeds/leechs.

I did copy the appdata folder from the previous installation, but even tried removing it and added all the seeding torrents again still no luck.

I know its a long and strange thread but can anyone gimme a clue as to what is going on please? im sick and tired of the BSNL speeds already but this is making it even more intolerable.

I don't want to sound crude but make sure that you have only one torrent active and try using a Private tracker.

^^ Nothing crude mate. And yes i do download only 1 torrent at a time and use IPT for most of my downloads.

@anish, err no mate they are both set to 0.

Even tried Deluge only to find the same 35-40 stuff. this is driving me nuts.

i also used to get 230kBps on 500 c++ plan but now speeds are stuck at 150kBps only.........while direct http still downloads at 220kBPs....i think bsnl is blocking torrents

it is only with the latest utorrent V2 & above, please uninstall that & install V1.8.5, i was having speed issues too, but things were back to normal when i installed the old one back again, also disable the auto update utility.

Actually this may sound stupid (:ashamed:) but if you have access to another system like a friend's laptop then you can try downloading torrents on that laptop using your connection and see if there's any difference.

If there's no difference then may be BSNL is capping torrents, which again can be verified by asking others in your area.

I'm no expert on this but just trying to help. :)

I think having your U/L capped at 80-85% gives you the best speeds. Both up and down. Unless i have gotten it all wrong. IPT= I... Private Tracker?

The new utp protocol in version utorrent 2 helps bypass bandwidth throttling by some ISPs abroad,i've read. At least until the ISPs remedy that loophole.
You could try setting different connection settings using the speed guide and see if that helps. Also try changing the port no. There's a suggested range but i can't remember right now. You might also wanna look into port forwarding.
