Value Sound card

A friend needs a sound card that can hook up via analog RCA out to his Denon AVR
The rest of his setup comprises of mid-end Klipsch towers, center, wharfedale Subs and some local surrounds

He tried hooking up his onboard Realcrap audio to the AVR but gets way too many pops & ticks

Having said that, he does not consider himself an audiophile or anywhere even close and feels anything above 2K on sound card is a waste of dosh
Please don't suggest anything uber expensive, I know he can easily afford it but his mind won't let him

Any suggestions?

He did try SPDIF, but his onboard does not do an auto switch between SPDIF passthrough and PCM depending on the playback source

SO everytime he switches between movies/Music, he needs to manually switch between SPDIF passthru and PCM using the soundcard control panel

While on the topic, would the difference in SQ between SPDIF and analog line outs depend entirely on the respective quality of the DACs on the soundcard and the internal DAC in the receiver, or is there more to it?

That would be about 90% of it :)
