Valve: PS3 a "total disaster on so many levels"

Valve Software's chief Gabe Newell has unleashed a stinging attack on PS3, saying Sony should cancel the console and start all over again.

"The PS3 is a total disaster on so many levels, I think It's really clear that Sony lost track of what customers and what developers wanted," Newell reportedly said in an interview with Game Informer.

He continued: "I'd say, even at this late date, they should just cancel it and do a do over. Just say, 'This was a horrible disaster and we're sorry and we're going to stop selling this and stop trying to convince people to develop for it'."

It's a different story with Nintendo, however, Newell revealing he really likes "everything that Nintendo is doing."

"The happy story is the Wii," he said. "I'm betting that by Christmas of next year, the Wii has a larger installed base than the 360. Other people think I'm crazy."

yeah i do agree that PS3 is not a bad console but at the same time there have been so many hiccups from sony's side and added to that there is as such not much availability of games for it, plus it is priced higher

imo the enthu for the wiimote might wear off sooner or later

To some extent.

But the thing is, it won't matter. The media hype will die, but they will have a new market. The fact is, I find many games made today boring as hell, because all they do is concentrate on sfx.

Which is probably reasonable seeing as how you have to spend 20 million bux to get them out. Might as well make sure the expensive part is good.

The Nintendo Wii will have fun silly little games (much like the DS) and make do with that.

The PS3 is really being damned because of lack of developer support. Newell is right in saying that asymmetric hardware is difficult to program for, therefore Sony really should have provided a way of abstracting that away from the programmer.

hehe me not supporting the ps3 or anything.. just pointed out what i felt about the wiimote and not the wii itself .. lots of ppl i know used to get these external thingys for consoles and lose interest after a while and continue with the regular game pad alone

Well Sony has really lost it since a couple of years in everything i.e. T.Vs, MP3 players and now gaming consoles.

Now, the stuff below is somewhat off-topic, still i wanted to write this:

I think that the advent of XBOX 360 and DirectX 10 is bad news for gaming industry and gaming on different platforms. Microsoft is trying to create a Monopoly by providing DirectX 10 only for Windows Vista. I don't understand why the hell did they design DirectX 10 to be so tightly bound with Vista that it doesn't even support Microsoft's most used OS 2day (i.e. Windows XP). This is really insane...

So, this will mean that gaming on PC would be restricted and totally dependent on Microsoft's OS i.e. Windows Vista in the near future.

and with numerous features that DirectX 10 would provide, it would really kill OpenGL unless something drastic happens.

Currently only a handful of vendors support other OSes like GNU/Linux & Macintosh and with DirectX 10 it would get only worse.

and all this is because of Microsoft. In the late 90s, when only OpenGL was used, Microsoft was a part of the OpenGL consortium. Then, suddenly it purchased a gaming software SDK, renamed it Direct 3D and later DirectX, only because it wanted to create a monopoly. Thus, began Microsoft's monopoly into the PC gaming industry...

Some ppl may think that the above stuff is Microsoft bashing and a piece of junk. These are my personal opinions, he he...:tongue::tongue:

Returning to the topic, i still believe Sony can fight it back!!!

owning a product doesn't mean you automatically need to endorse it ;) Owned a ps1, ps2 and currently a psp. :)

But u replied after my reply so i thought u were referring to my post (i.e. bad press), so i was trying to clear the air:tongue:

and i am not endorsing anything, it just that i like Sony's consoles... and i mentioned it.

I wouldn't call the PS3 a total disaster. It's no doubt quite ugly from a dev's perspective but I'm sure they'll eventually get used to it just how devs are currently getting used to working with multi-cores.

There is a difference here. This is multicore to a crazy level. Believe you me, asymmetric processing is a nightmare. It has to be hidden entirely. In fact, the CPU+GPU division of duties is one form, which is hidden entirely (OpenGL and DirectX anyone?). But it is going to be more complex here. The SPEs on the Cell are quite useless for non vector processing, so all that can be done on them is the physics.

BTW, whatever happened to all that crap -> connect your PS3 to a Cell powered TV and get a dual processor PS3.

sooner or later PS3 will come around..games will start to look better eventually, and eventually it may be even turn out to be better than the rest...

but me for one, wud rather buy an XBOX now and wait for the games to improve on PS3..

i totally agree with monty on MS's monoply...it is only a matter of time before another lawsuit hits them..:D

I don't think so... the fact is they have implemented Dx10 in such a way that it is dependent on the driver model... so they are safe. Besides, since they now allow native OpenGL, there is no monopoly. Anyone can use OpenGL if they wish.

It always takes time to get used to the dev kits.

Ps3 was compared to X360's graphics by Gamespot, and even they said Ps3 has done superb so far to have almost match upto X360's gfx, given the fact Devs are new to Ps3 and have had a year with the X360.

Its not about getting used to - I think the dev kits just don't do enough (at least that is the impression I get from all these interviews).

Basically, it isn't as easy to develop for the platform. Will that prevent good (as in gfx and other such stuff) games from being developed? No, but it will slow them down, make it more expensive, and fewer will be produced.

One of the most difficult things to do in multithreaded programming is load balancing. Asymmetric processing allows (in some ways) better load balancing, but makes it more difficult to program it easily.
