Hi Guys

I was thinking of getting a Laptop HDD Casing.
The Vantec Nexstar which was purchased earlier , my sis took it to UK.

So now am without any sort of external HDD.

Saw this amazing product which can double as a media player and can
help me watch videos on the TV.

Wanted ur suggestions on this , I want to play Xvid , Divx & MP3 on the TV.
Most of my videos are Xvid.

And use it as a external HDD.

Please tell me ur views on this product.

More Info:
Vantec Technology Inc.

Is there any other solution other than this.

Waiting for ur suggestions.

AVOX Jukebox 100

Hi Guys

Just got a reply from Nilesh.

He has the Avox - 100 in stock.

Cost is 4574.00 + 4% = 4756Rs

Looks like a descent cost to me.

Hi, My opinion on these drives is that unless you are going to convert all the video's yourself with a fixed ratio and codec, including the way the audio track in encoded, it is of not much use.

The decoder is proprietory and is known to get messed with non-standard formats. If you watch a lot of movies downloaded from the net which may have different pixel resolution and audio encoded in either AC3 or specific formats they will not play back smoothly or even not at all. That's why you need so many codec packs on a pc. Not an option on the Box.

IF its only viewing movies which are converted from your DVD's or you dont mind reencoding some of your movies to the format which is perfect for the Avox then go ahead.

Its not restricting me to any specific resolution na , i can have any sort of resolution na like 640x352 , 516x218 etc...........

Most of the Videos i have are Xvid and Divx and they are non GMC and Non QEPL and that sort of videos play easily on the AVOX 100.

From the reviews i read it playbacks AC3 , Mp3 , DTS Audio properly

Also DVD Video , Divx , Xvid Playback is gr8.

It has a Sigma RealImage 8511 Chip mostly.

Just tell me if they are restricting me to some specific resolution.

[I hope its not restricting]

Is it just the case , or does it include HDD too ??

Just the case

Hi, I know by specs it does not restrict you to any resolution, but custom encoded files, sometimes do not have standard resolutions. A couple of pixel lines missing from the top or the side, would cause decoder chips to get confused. As long as the aspect ration remains, it should not have a problem.

Again, standard Divx or even DVD should play back seemlessly. its just that personally i download a lot of documentaries, which are in not standard codec formats. Specially some older BBC use a wierd Xvid mod for encoding. I have faced problems with that on the PC, too.

Why i mentioned all this was that it was my experience with a similar unit called the Lacie Silverscreen, which i had for a couple of days to play around with, but that was maybe a year back, i think firmware's and decoders should have improved by now.

Another thing, i don't think it will playback WMV. which may not be a big issue to you.

As you mentioned if your formats are going to be standard, i think its a good buy. specially at that price. As i said, this is my opinion. Though i would love to see your review on this.

Most of the videos i have are in standard aspect ration and they are encoded
specially for playback on divx based dvd players.

I have played most of my files very easily on philips and lg based players supporting divx playback and they have played flawlessly.

Regarding the review , first let me get it.

I will be getting that in diwali , so theres time.
