VAT for mobile phones purchased online

I was browsing through amazon.in recently and I saw that they are selling Nexus 5 16GB model for as low as RS.25k (http://www.amazon.in/Google-Nexus-D...1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1410782002&sr=1-1).

In retail shops this model is available in between 28-29k. I went to a Reliance Digital outlet and argued this point with the salesmen there. They were selling the piece for around 29.5k and I asked them why they were selling at such a high price if it is available so cheap online?

They said that Phones purchased online do not have VAT attached to them, hence when you take them for servicing, the service centre will refuse to touch your phone. I find this funny considering that even online phones come with warranty. I also head that for phones purchased online, the warranty date starts on the date of the manufacture of the phone and not when you have purchased it.

I was not sure of the facts concerning VAT hence I did not stand around and argue with the salesman. Can anybody verify whether it's true? Shall I be better off purchasing the phone from a retail store rather than online?

Srinivas

Recently my wife bought some cases for mobile phones from amazon and even they come with vat bill. Reliance digital guys are morons and dont take their words. You can verify with the seller for confirmation.

The part about VAT might be true if the online seller doesn't give you a proper bill. I'm not sure if service centres care if you pay VAT or not.
Anyway, these are the usual 'gimmicks' brick and mortar stores use to convince people to buy from their store. Next time tell them even Reliance Digital has an online store, does that mean Reliance sells without a VAT bill? There was a thread where a Croma employee said the same thing - funny thing is Croma sells on Amazon.

The only thing with online shopping is sometimes they send you the wrong item and you will have to run from pillar to post as in the case of shopclues where we received a different case for my s3. But that was not with amazon

The prices online have VAT included in them. The bill sent by Amazon and Flipkart have clear demarcation of Price and VAT. And they also have TIN no.s printed on them.
It has been true for every product I have purchased online, not just phones.
