Car & Bike VAT on second hand car?

Hey Guys,
I have finalised a used maruti zen for purchase.
I wanna know the amount involved in transferring the car to my name.
Do I need to pay VAT(4%)?
The dealer is asking 3k for the transfer process?
Should I get it done myself?

Please help guys.

IMO, transfer charges are shared 50-50 between buyer and seller but each transaction can have it's own terms.

3K sounds about right for transfer charges if you are paying the entire transfer amount. If I recally correctly, in my case, the buyer paid 1K, I paid 1K and other incidental expenses were shared(however my father executed the deal and I was not present). I've no idea on VAT though.

U r buying a used product...not a new product.....think on that line

4% VAT on used cars.
I think it was introduced in 2006.
But wat i wanna know is whether the RTO will transfer the car without VAT?
(Transfer chanrges are minimal)
