Laptops VBI laptops...and the BLACK truth of laptop industry...

Sirius Black

Disciple
Intel has launched VBI ,verified by intel initiative with 3 ODM (original design manufacturers) namely Quanta , Asus and Compal (not to be confused with Compaq).
Am sure most of us havent even heard of these names but these three enjoy a share of the 70% of the worlds laptop production share amongst the various ODMs.
So what is a ODM? Basically ODMs or original design manufacturers are the ones who make various models of laptops ie Research design assebling etc all done by them and are sold off to various big names and the big names are HP , dell , Sony , Apple ,IBM etc.All these company s sell them with their brand and warranty included with a few minor additions.
Most of the people are unaware of all this.If ya dont believe this try googlin or wiki :p

So these VBI laptops will be taken under the warranty by Intel and will have 7 basic interchangeble parts ,which are the basic parts of the laptops ie LCD , battery , optical drive etc.
Barebones or bodies for various laptops will also be given along and the overall prices are pretty less as compared to other *Branded* laptops.

Give it a look , am sure it ll interest ya. :eek:hyeah:

I am unaware if there are any VBI laptops have made their way into the Indian market and I, for sure, dont care what Intel plans out with this. Laptop component replacement for hdd, odd, keyboard, lcd, battery, AC Adapter doesnt mean anything! It can be easily done by anyone at a cheap price if things do go wrong. Most of the general laptops come with atleast 1 year of warranty but that doesnt translate into the belief that they would die after that. If some problem do arise, it can be solved at a little price. Growing penetration of laptops would make so called manufacturers churn out better after sales service with improved warranty periods.

As for who really manufacturers laptops, you are right. Not many are aware of it. So be wise and get the system on the config and the after sales service and NOT the brand name in general.

dude same thing happens with nearly every computer part....its not even restricted to this industry its for every other industry in the worl, apple ipods, nokia phones, car amplifiers.........name it dude nearly everything made in the world is in india or china...

Hey Sirius, Name me two known electronics/PC brands that make their own products :p

Be it Nokia/Dell/Compaq, the entire manufacturing process and at times even the design process is outsourced to OEM manufacturers like Flextronics or Compal based out of Taiwan/Malaysia/China

However , why you might still want to buy say a Dell and not a QUanta is due to two reasons:

1) You know that the Quality Control checks at Dell would ensure that you do not get a lemon

2) Even if you do get a Lemon, after sales support from Dell would be decent enough to get it resolved

TO take it further, why would you not buy a Sahara Laptop over a IBM/Lenovo even though they may be being made by the same OEM manufacturer despite the fact that a Sahara notebook would be cheaper than the IBM? Think about it and you will get the answer...

Fujitsu for starters, they even have their own hdd :p and what my point really was, it was regardin the quality of laptops.
U talk about dell / compaq and compare them with Quanta?
First some info on Quanta :-
"Quanta has made notebooks for Compaq, Gateway, Dell, IBM, and Apple. It has probably made them for Toshiba and Sony as well, but these companies don't always announce these kind of OEM deals. Quanta does not manufacturer under its own name and only deals with companies that can order a minimum of 10,000 notebooks a month.

Dell has signed up Quanta to produce 4.5-5 million high-end portable PCs. Production will commence Q1 2002 and stretch to July 2003. Quanta will ship 250,000-300,000 units per month through 2002 and around three million during 2003.

Dell also planned to become Compal's largest client during the second half of 2001, taking over from Hewlett-Packard. Compal is Taiwan's number two notebook maker and was expected to make two million notebooks for Dell over the year - 88 per cent of its production. At the start of 2001 it forecast its annual shipments would rise to between 2.6 and 2.9 million units for the year. "
The source Quanta laptop dances in pole position | The Register

now regarding the Quality :- These notebooks that are under VBI ie verified by Intel programme will have their warranty covered by Intel itself.
Nd when it comes to warranty under the brand name of Intel am sure we can all understand there wont be much of problems.Regarding quality issues of Dell , i think its a very well known fact now.
I would not prefer Sahara coz i am not sure about their service since i am not even clear about the existance and quality standards .of sahara computers.Am sure Intel is like billion times better.
Am personally not against branded lappies its just that i feel its can turn out to be a waste shelling so much just to give in for their marketting budgets ;)
Cheerz :)

Uh-oh...seems you got me wrong there....

Quanta makes notebooks for Compaq ....agreed...yet I would buy a Compaq and not a COmpal for the simple reason that I know that the QC checks at COmpaq would ensure that I would not get defective merchandise

Actually for that matter, a dell i bought recently was made by Asus...Now I would not mind buying a Asus branded laptop for the reason that Asus needs to maintain a minimum quality level in the laptops that leave its factory for the markets....Reason being after Asus having spent so much building a recognizable and trustworthy brand would not ruin its entire brand building investment by letting lemons reach the market...Same holds true for Compaq or Dell

However, I cannot say the same with a reasonable degree of confidence about Compal or Quanta

Fujitsu for starters, they even have their own hdd and what my point really was, it was regardin the quality of laptops.

LOL..Big deal, if you open up a Compaq laptop, the HDD may be from Fujitsu or seagate, the battery may be from Sony and the LCD may be from Samsung

Or for that matter, the HDD on my Fujitsu Lifebook S2110 is a Hitachi Travelstar while the HDD on my old IBM Thinkkpad was a Fujitsu :p

Electronis manufacturers do not believe in Vertical integration ;)

Oh, and as for the linked article

# The warranty: Compare warranties among different vendors.
Agreed and obvious

# Features: Does it do all you need? Don't go overboard, but don't sacrifice.
Agreed and obvious

# Price: Are you paying for a name, or for features and warranty? Remember, the name does not differentiate the machine from any othe
Disagree for the reason mentioned above

Quanta is not giving the warranty , INTEL is giving the warranty ie VBI verified by intel and 2 years warrranty by Intel.
About the defective merchandise , the biggest ODM wont screw it up also.
BTW the piece will first be checked by your reseller first nd i wd prefer checking everything b4 even giving the money...

Aint that Risky :p just a new thing that ll take time to set it.

lolzz its written by The owner of Pwerbooks.com :p I reallywasnt expectin nything else.
For the past abt 1 month or so i ve been readin almost all the notebookreview.com notebookforums.com etc , and i can safely say it da best deal around.
As far as my dealer goes , he s pretty reliable.
Any laptop is havin 7 major interchangeable parts, thats the concept of CBB and thus the concept of VBI initiative.
Those parts can /will be replaced by intel @ warranty of 2 years.
In india either your vendor or you can directly approach intel sales office local to your city. They will take care of the warranty.

Cheerz :D:hap2:
