Hi Guys,

I need a set of really compact USB powered speakers for a Macbook Air. Need it for movies when we travel. Sound needs to be a bit loud but not necessarily of great 'quality' as it will not be used for music. Compact and light are the key requirements.

Any suggestions?

Install Boom on Mac. U will forget need for speakers. Also if u really want more sound, use VLC + Boom. Insanely loud.

Thanks guys.

I see some speakers as saying OS as Windows. I presume that is an error and OS is immaterial for speakers?

Went to Croma and found even the speakers very low in volume. This was in QT and Divx Player. Tried VLC and found that I don't even need to buy the speakers, as the MBA speakers are MORE than adequate.

Never realized that software could make so much difference in volume.

I've borrowed a pair of cheap F&D USB powered speakers (V520) from a friend since I do not have any desktop speakers with me right now. These have a small midrange-like driver at the back and a tweeter at the front and outputs insanely high volume for the price it comes for and has appreciable sound quality at 30~40% volume from the OS' volume control. The only reason I wanted these are for playing some titles on the PC and it has been serving me well so far. The only gripe is that these units tend to drift away gradually even though it has a rubber base owing to slight vibrations at high volumes. Not a big deal though.

There is no separate volume or tone control or on-off switch for the units. Just cables - one for the USB and the other 3.5 mm TRS jack for the input. My friend was using this inside his Maruti 800 by powering it from the cigarette lighter port and the speakers were very loud. Please give them a try if you still need a pair.

^^ If budget is not a constraint then try X-Mini Max models. Very good speakers in my opinion. Battery backup of almost 10 hours and can be charged via USB.

I have been using X-Mini max 2 for the past 2 years without any hiccups. Much better than my HP paviliion laptop although it claims to hv SRS surround speaker.
