Very unusual problem

Dear friends,
I have a very unusual problem with BSNL Broadband. I have connection through the USB port and have Windows Xp ( 256 MB RAM). But almost always in order to get link in the modem I have to hang up the reciever of my telephone to which the connection is given. Though I get the connection I am unable to recieve any calls from the phone. Do u know the reason for this or any solution????? Earlier I had the dial up bsnl service. I changed it into broadband. :S

A splitter is required to split the telephone and broadband signals that come via the same wire. this problem can occur if the splitter is not used and the two are just connected in parallel.

first check if the the splitter is there. it should look like a small white box with the main cable as the input and two outputs, one going to the modem and the other to the telephone.

sometimes the idiots dont connect the splitter properly. a friend of mine had the same prob . telephone line -> splitter -> phone and modem. also the socket for phone should be connected to phone only, and the one for modem connected to modem only

Splitter if connected properly and still not working

Next possibility is that Ur splitter is BUSTED and it aint splitting

Borrow and Try another splitter if ur friends or H/w guy has one just to check

Also since u were previously on dialup, make sure U've deleted the Dialup connection from Network&Internet connections, could be conflicting or some such crap

Windows works in strange way:\

this is possibly not a windows problem as the adsl link comes through the telephone line. it more seems like a line problem.

@Hermione: you should check if the splitter has been connected properly as greenhorn and i said. the problem seems to be there. if connected properly, it could also be a faulty splitter.
