Welcome to VG Charts
VG Charts is the premier source for videogame sales charts on the Internet.
Despite this, the data on VG Charts is unofficial and in some cases incomplete. How can it be the premier source on the Internet then?
Well, videogame sales data is a very difficult commodity to come by. Each territory has different systems by which data is collected and this data is often in conflict with data released directly from game publishers themselves. Attempting to assemble all these scraps of information has been a mine field that has, until today, been avoided.
VG Charts is the first internet website to attempt to, as meticulously and accurately as possible, collect together in one place all the available videogame sales data from across the world and provide users with a one-stop location from which to find out how there favourite game is performing, gain a better understanding of the market as a whole and compare the performance of different games.
A number of different sources and methods are used to produce the data on VG Charts, the following sections aim to explain this in more detail.
From where does the data come?
The Japanese Weekly Charts
There are three tracking companies in Japan which produce weekly sales charts based on polling a proportion of total retailers and extrapolating their data up to represent the data for the whole country:
Media Create
Famitsu / Enterbrain
Dengeki
VG Charts uses a proprietary system which takes publically available data from the above three trackers along with sales and shipment data released from the game manufacturers in Japan to produce what we feel is the most accurate depiction of the pattern of sales for each title.
Since VG Charts does not collect or assemble the raw data itself, we recommend that anybody wishing to use officially sourced data for formal reports and so on should really contact the tracking services above and subscribe to their data, since VG Charts cannot guarantee that all games will be covered- only typically games which make the top 50 at some point in their lifetime. We thank the companies above for the fantastic service that they do for the general public, and urge anybody wishing to find out more to contact them directly.
When analysing the sales of a particular title, or comparing present data to historic data, we strongly recommend the use of VG Charts in your analysis, since all data is adjusted to account for changes over time in tracking methods and so on, and in most cases data is matched up with the official shipment data released periodically by the game manufactuers themselves, and so is as accurate as possible.
