I have an android 3g phone and upon activation of 3g on it, I was told by vodafone operator that if I make a video call It would be subject to extra charges.

I used to think video calling will use the phone data plan there is no way for them to know, its a video call. However vodafone website also mentions video calling doesn't take up 3g bandwidth, it uses voice channels and will be charged according to minutes spoken :scared14:

So, if I use google talk or skype to make a video call to other phone/computer its charged according to minutes and not data used? Is it really true ? I thought it was same as making it on WiFi...

look, when you are making a video call using your phone's inbuilt capability, you'll be charged according to the operator's call rate..

But, if you use google or skype or any other third party voip/video 3g calls, then the call will be using internet data and you'll be charged according to the data rate or data plan, whichever applicable..look, when you are making a video call using your phone's inbuilt capability, you'll be charged according to the operator's call rate..
