Have a Lot of videos in .mpg format,:D Want to compress them to save space, Which format gives me the best compression without losing the quality...???

Seen .mkv and .rm files with small file size and a good quality, Any particular software to convert .mpg files to .mkv or .rm.....???
Video compression experts please speak up ... :D

mediacoder. you can select formats you need :) very configurable while still being user-friendly if you want to go with the defaults :)

mkv is just a container. you can put any kind of video in it, like xvid, divx or H264. for I have seen H264 provides better quality over xvid and divx. ppl say that divx is the worst quality among three.

H264 put in mp4 container is popularly known as ipod format.

best tool for doing all these is virtualdubmod

go in a step by step fashion.

1. configure H264 using tutorials from doom9.org

2. read tutorials about using virtualdubmod.

3. read tutorials about seperating audio from video and transcoding it to mp3.

4. you may also need to learn about avisynth if you want to resize and deinterlace the movie.

put all together, you need to learn how to rip dvds to xvid/h264 and tailor the procedure to suit according to your needs.

tools I recommond would be, megui, virtualdubmod, besweet with belight, avisynth. megui is better than gordian knot. many people also suggest autoGK (auto gordian knot)

I guess you should start with AutoGK and megui and use which ever is easy to use.

SUPER was a good reco. MediaCoder trumps all though, IMO.. choose input file, choose output format, click "Go" (or whatever it's called, can't remember now :D), and that's all..

XVID will give you marginally better compression than DIVX, and is well supported. If you install the Direct show filters for XVID via ffdshow, then you can easily compress your file using almost any program you want.......as the real magic happens via ffdshow.

.rm using virtualdub no...use winavi....look for P version on some torrent site..

That's not good suggestion I would say... Asking members to get *ahem*...

use XviD in either mkv or avi containers. h.264 is a much better codec but it also takes much longer to compress if you want better quality to filesize ratio than XviD.

for regular usage, XviD still holds up. video production is my line of work and i only use h.264 when i have to for the final delivery. quick compress jobs are done in XviD.

For the One Click Easy Solution : Media coder

For the Complicated : Avisynth + Virtualdub + Xvid + CQM's

All To AVI conversion with gr8 precision and comoression control. ;)
