Video conversion & compression without loosing its quality

Hi

I am looking for a software to reduce the size of video files without looking its video and sound quality.

Pls tell me which software can do this at its best.
I am curently using Factory format 2.1 for the conversion of files.

I hv most of the movies in mkv & avi formats which i want to shrink further. Xilisoft doesn't help here because it can't read mkv files.
 
I tried my hands on Super but i was not able to understand that software, even i was not able to find the start conversion switch in the software.
