Hey fellas,

It's been forever since I've posted and even longer since I've assembled a computer. Need some help deciding on what to buy for a friend.

Primary Use: Photoshop and Aftereffects for video editing (Green screen work)

After almost 8 years of not having kept up with the PC scene, I was totally overwhelmed at the number of options to go with to assemble a computer. Not knowing how to proceed, I looked for the easiest option which happened to be the Asus GL552JX laptop, but my conscience wouldn't permit me to recommend this to a friend, especially if I could get him a better configuration for the same price by means of an assembled computer.

Can stretch his budget up to 80k (maybe 90 tops) but it needs to include everything (Monitor, Case, Power supply, you get the idea). I'm wondering if an i7 w/ 8 or 16 gig ram and a good GPU would be doable.

Would really appreciate any recommendations. Thanks.

Thanks for that. I'm aware of the template, didn't think it would be useful as I'm not coming in to this with any preferences. I've left it completely open.

Budget: 80-90
Processor Brand: Prefer Intel over AMD
Existing Hardware: None
Purchase location: Bangalore / Online (Flipkart or similar)
Primary use: Photoshop and Aftereffects for video editing (Green screen work)
Monitor Res: Full HD should do just fine
OC: No
OS: Win 7 (Won't be buying that)

How would this compare to the Asus GL552JX which sports the following
i7 4720HQ (4th gen)
DDR3 1600 8GB
GTX 950M 4GB
1 TB Internal Storage

@ 75k
 
The desktop will be much much faster.

Personally would recommend a faster processor and offset it by getting a lower rung GPU.
 
I might be wrong, but don't the newer versions of design and video editing software make use of the GPU?

Same budget, could things be changed around for an i7?

While newer software make great use of video cards, having a top CPU is always going to be better.

Edit: Google searches say that After Effects does not benefit from a strong GPU unless you use Ray Traced 3D
 
#1 The Motherboard that @bssunilreddy mentioned seems to have onboard graphics. If After Effects and Photoshop (primary use) don't use the GPU significantly, would it be prudent to upgrade to the i7 6700 and forego the GPU for now?
#2 what about going in for a Broadwell i7. Would it would be worth going in for a processor that is one generation older if the increase in performance is not as significant?

The i7 6700 seems to be retailing at around 27k How much could be saved by going in for an i7 from Broadwell?

AFAIK , you should definitely have a dedicated GPU. I'm sorry I don't have details of prices, etc I built an editing rig 12 months ago based on the X99 chipset. Bought a used R9 280X to save cash. AMD cards are superb for OpenCL which Premiere can take advantage of. After Effects, not much
 
A laptop CPU is limited by TDP/laptop cooling system, so by default it has lower base clocks, in most cases will not be able to sustain turbo clocks for too long, and can even end up throttling. A Desktop CPU on the other hand has a lot more headroom and is only limited by your CPU cooler. Off the bat, your desktop CPU should easily be at least 20% faster.

The GPU is on the CPU die, not the motherboard.

Broadwell chips are almost impossible to come by, and I think Intel didn't even bother releasing them in India.

Avoid laptop which it has high maintenance cost and high fail rate due to it overheating after 1-2 year as there is no change to fix the hardware due to lack of issue which keep heat much while heavy usage it after an year

it is better to get desktop which it can been easy to clean it

You need to decide whether you need portability or power. Cant have both. Id suggest go for a cheaper rig upto say 50-60 and also get a laptop like Macbook Air that packs a decent punch. You can increase the specs of the Desktop like the GFX card later.
 
Some Tips -
1. I presume ur friend may also use Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2015
2. If his work involves mainly HD formats - 2k or Higher - Then go for a minimum of 4 TB Storage Space plus a minimum of 500 GB SSD.
3. Build a Hackintosh with a Giga mobo (or Win 7 system)
4. Monitor - Good Quality 23 or 24"
5. Go for a 8 core processor and minimum 24 GB RAM -
Here even an older gen i7 like Haswell is ok
6. Dedicated GPU - Older Gen like 750 or 760 series is fine.
7. A normal cpu-air cooled system... good cabinet with at least 4-7 fans

Here even an older gen i7 like Haswell is ok
6. Dedicated GPU - Older Gen like 750 or 760 series is fine. (Better and faster GPU that would support scrubbing through the footage quickly via live rendering. Not all footage is supported but some codecs are supported. Life will be much much easier with this. Check linus tech tips videos about their editing machine and server)
7. A normal cpu-air cooled system... good cabinet with at least 4-7 fans (2 are enough, 3 if you're feeling paranoid. Again check a LTT video on how adding fans after 2 results in difference of 1-2 degrees max. Lot more noise though.)

the whole things comes up to a little over 80k. He has an existing 24" monitor, so don't need one at the moment.

CPU: Decided against the K model as there's not going to be any OC'ing
MBD: H170 instead of a Z170 as there really won't be any OC'ing. Decided on the Pro Gamer version as opposed to the regular Pro version as some people mentioned that the quality of components is a little better with the Gamer editions.
RAM: I figured if he needs more, he can but two more sticks to push it up to 32 later
GFX: The 960 seemed more bang for buck compared to the 970 in terms of Price vs Performance
CAS: It's down to CM K380 or the Corsair SPEC03
PSU: CM600w - any good?


Let me know what you guys think and if any edits should be made. The board and Processor alone come up to a little over 40k. Is it worth it, or would a previous generation do? All the Haswell chips I see on eBay are pretty much the same price.

Never really thought about a Hackintosh option, but that sounds cool. Would it work with the above? Also any dealer recommendations here in Bangalore, someone whose good in terms of pricing?

Also:
1) Do not compromise on the SSD capacity - Go for at least 500 GB (this will serve well for Adobe & the scratch disks can be assigned to this; so all read/write jobs will be faster).
2) Chose Seasonic PSU - best for its rugged performance.
3) A K series processor need not always be thought of OCing - its features offer better performance for film and media related work

Dial back a bit on the CPU and MOBO. Get the 4790 and a cheaper Mobo. make it in 27-30K. Use the spare money and add some more, for better GPU and SSD. Get a Samsung 850 Evo. They have super fast cache that really kills it when it comes 90% of the tasks. Later add another and use one for the cache in apps so the source files and cache add up to provide lightening speeds. Keep the current project on the ssds Also try snapdeal. They have insane prices and offers often. I tracked for a few weeks and got some brilliant prices without the cashback mumbo-jumbo. Also once there was a 5% off on two or more items on computer components. It all adds up when you have 20k components.

1. Please buy it from local market as its extremely painful to see someone pay such prices found on online sites compared to local market price.

2. i7 and minimum 16gigs of ram is must for ur requirement.

3. No need to spend so much extra on a gtx 970 unless ur gaming. 960 is just find and guess what, its good enough for 1080p gaming, well pretty much.

4. Go haswell and save some money.

5. Now since you would be build a custom pc, why not choose components so that in future if you like to, u can make a kickass hackintosh out of it (for final cut pro and stuffs like that)

Ram- Corsair vengeance/gskill ripjaws 2x8gb 1600mhz ddr3
Gpu- Asus/msi gtx 960 2gb
Psu- seasonic s12ii 520
Cabi- corsair 100r/corsair spec 03/corsair 400r/nzxt source 210/antec gx300
Ssd- 256gb samsung 850 evo
Hdd- 1tb wd blue/purple
Cooler- cooler master tx3 evo/212x hyper
Monitor- dell s2216h
Keyboard- tvs gold bharat mechanical
Mouse- logitech g90


Add 16gigs of more ram later since after effect works better the more ram you have.
