Video editing software

Hi guys.. I want to edit an old movie of a family function at home.. kindly let me know which software is good in video editing. Also tell me the hardware requirements for that..
currently I have a PC with intel i3 4th gen processor, 8gb DDR3 ram, 1 gb nvidia graphics card.. 1 TB hard drive (Sata)..

Adobe premiere pro for editing and Adobe after effects for Post processing

Else just use windows movie maker.
 
the topic of video editing is an ocean. but you can start with handbrake.fr

There are many rich ui tools which will help you like, power director etc... but all of them are paid.
if you want to use the opensource tools which are way more powerful but at the same time are tough to use and require you to write scripts etc...

writing scripts won't be easy as i think
 
You need a video capture device. Typically a firewire cable used to be used in the early 2000s if you wanted digital video. Else you can use any analog TV capture card.
