Video games that contain high levels of action can actually improve your vision, claim researchers at the University of Rochester. Their findings, which will appear in the journal Psychological Science, show that people who played action video games for a few hours a day over the course of a month improved by about 20 percent in their ability to identify letters presented in clutter—a visual acuity test similar to ones used in regular ophthalmology clinics.

“Action video game play changes the way our brains process visual information,†says Daphne Bavelier, professor of brain and cognitive sciences at the University of Rochester. “After just 30 hours, players showed a substantial increase in the spatial resolution of their vision, meaning they could see figures like those on an eye chart more clearly, even when other symbols crowded in.â€

Bavelier and graduate student Shawn Green tested college students who had played few, if any, video games in the last year. “That alone was pretty tough,†says Green. “Nearly everybody on a campus plays video games.â€

At the outset, the students were given a crowding test, which measured how well they could discern the orientation of a “T†within a crowd of other distracting symbols—a sort of electronic eye chart. Students were then divided into two groups. The experimental group played Unreal Tournament for roughly one hour a day. The control group played Tetris, a game the researchers believe is equally demanding in terms of motor control, but visually less complex than the shooter.

After about a month of near-daily gaming, the Tetris players showed no improvement on the test, but the Unreal Tournament players could tell which way the “T†was pointing much more easily than they had just a month earlier.

“When people play action games, they're changing the brain's pathway responsible for visual processing,†says Bavelier. “These games push the human visual system to the limits and the brain adapts to it. That learning carries over into other activities and possibly everyday life.â€

The improvement was seen both in the part of the visual field where video game players typically play, but also beyond—the part of your vision beyond the monitor. The students' vision improved in the center and at the periphery where they had not been “trained.†That suggests that people with visual deficits, such as amblyopic patients, may also be able to gain an increase in their visual acuity with special rehabilitation software that reproduces an action game's need to identify objects very quickly.

lol, Seems to be true in my case, i started using spectacles when i was 11 yrs old, had a power of -4 in both my eyes, but last year when i started to play games, my power reduced to -3.5 :P.

Lol...

I should play more then eh? :P..

My no. has gone up infact.. From .25's in each eye.. To 1.5 in the Left and .75 in the right. Farsight only.. :/..

aDITYA THEN YOU SHOULD RUN ALL GAMES IN 85hz+ AND NOT ON 60Hz.. 60Hz REALLY SPOILS EYES. using 85Hz.. and my vision is spectacle free since 12 years+

i could have used that info years ago :(

my father was very angry on me that during college days i was playing games for minimum 6 hrs a day (i was having a very good continuous gameplay capacity) so he used to tell me that get up and start studying or go to office or do some activity. i was getting very frustrated everyday because of that. There came an article, Gaming improves brain speed, logic, reflexes.. research was condected by some scientist. blah blah.. dont remember what exactly that article was. I instally cut off that article from mumbai mirror and yeah that article was on nVIDIA Geforce 8800 8600 7950 7900 7600 GT GTX ATi Radeon x1950 x1900 x1800 1600 XT Pro - Guru of 3D: PC Hardware Reviews also. (Mumbai mirror copies word to word each n every articles which guru3d posts on its site.) so i was having 2 sources the next day on mumbai mirror. i showed to dad and explained him.. Look dad. see this article.. I am fast at ur work all because of this! (i used to work 1/2 hour on weekend tallying on my dad's office stockand dad used to take around 2 hours doing same on excel.) so i told dad, playing games has improved my logic a lot and the brain speed and reflexes too thats why my fingers run like horses legs on keyboard. and from that day. dad didnt even tell me that dont play games... gradually when i was dedicated to work (the job i am doin since 10 mts) my gaming hours reduced from 6-8 to 2-3.. now since 2 months my total gaming hours would be 6 hours.. that bad and i feel my brain runs slow, lack of intellegence, less memory capacity, low logic (decision making) ..

isnt it a wonderful true story?? My dad loves when i play games still...

ROFL^. Most of these theories are junk. this one sounds a bit more feasible than your average - "TV sey aakh kharab ho jayegi" story. How is it possible to mess up your vision by just playing a few games? How can cilliary muscles weaken so badly infact that they can't adjust the thingy in front which focuses the image on the retina, I've forgotten some terms, but most of that is correct. Not touched biology for some time now.

It's a known fact that after enough excercise muscles actually get stronger, therefore it could imply that the muscles strengthen up/harden/lose flexibility but it is definitely not possible for them to weaken.

Of course, the people who do this kind of stuff know more about it than I ever will but I'm not sure which way to turn. There are two sides, one where gaming can harm your eyes and the other side where it just might improve it.

How have I solve this problem? Simple, I don't care about my eyesight and keep playing computer games like the socially retarded loser I actually am.

a normal TV runs at 60Hz. so the eyes gets spoilt cause of the flicker.. PC running at 85Hz doesnt spoil eyes much.

@l33t_5n1p3r_max i am too socially retarded looser

they are flickerfree. 100Hz and on. if you use LCD on ur pc and if the LCD refresh rate set to 60Hz, LCD wont flicker at all.

nice thread. i loved this thread writing my story

who wants more tips sitting for long on ur PC and improving visual experiences?

Yeah read this artical on papers too ;)

But what they actually meant would be the observing nature when u see things. I mean looking under the hood ... etc

Yes now I tend to notice more things...

take a printout of the thread or the article and pin up on ur desk :P lol ur mom/dad will read this up.. no need to tell ;) they wont believe if u dont have proof like i had..
