I have a 720p screen for my HT that connects to :

a) a PC via HDMI
b) a console (Wii) via component cables
c) TataSky via Composite

(a) obviously looks very good esp while playing HD content (and even with regular DVD content)

(b) looks pretty OK

(c) isnt exactly what I will call good PQ

The AV receiver in the setup is a Marantz SR 6300 which does not support HDMI upscaling

So the qstns/options I have:

1) Is it worth upgrading to a AV receiver with a built in upscaler so that I can feed (b) and (c) via component and composite and feed the upscaled HDMI in the panel

2) Should I look at PC based upscaling solutions wherein a video capture cartd takes composite input from (c), then does a software upscaling and feeds it to the panel via HDMI

3) external Upscaling is overhyped and the Panels' (Bravia 32S) internal scaler is already doing the best it can....after all it is foolish to expect good calrity from a SD signal

honestly dont bother with option a.

For tata sky, just rout everything through PC ( but do invest in good tv tuner ).

Or simply forget about it and feed the tata directly to TV and use theater mode to watch everything on tv. It softens the entire image and adds that film effect which greatly reduce the artifacts of the tatasky feed. It might take some time to get used to but I have found it to be good enough solution.

hmm, ya, at first look, theatre mode looks rather pale and washed out so i never bothered too much with it

will give this a shot

I have a Pinnacle PCTV tuner which is an OKish capture card

Tried playing around with upscaling via dScaler but the initial results weren't too promising

I really doubt if a hardware upscaler on an AVR will help much with the terrible PQ on TataSky (So much for DVD quality transmission/cd quality audio...what a joke) but may try borrowing an upscaling AVR to see what it does

It's actually SVCD quality & not DVD both resolution are merely same but bitrate are different.......
