Vista 32 bit or 64 Bit

I am currently using the 32 bit version of vista home premium. I have 4GB of ram in the system and a GPU 1GB 4870.. I want to know whether I will get any appreciable performance boost of I upgrade to 64Bit.

I use my computer to watch movies, play games, browse internet and do some video editing (One video in about 3 months).

I just wanted to know the experience of users who have already changed from 32 bit to 64 bit.

I have win7 64 bit.
I have same configuration as you have. 4GB is more than enough to run 64 bit. It also runs 32 bit application. Go for 64 bit applications too, they works faster then 32bit.

A 64bit OS will definitely use the entire 4GB RAM and will be faster than a 32bit OS. Even all renowned applications now come in 64 bit flavour.

I have been using 64bit Windows 7 and have compared with 32bit and 64bit is far stable and faster :)

Time to move :)

I concur with all my comrades. I switched over to Ubuntu 64bit from 32bit and the difference was visible. If you have 4GB (or more) RAM in your system, then there should be nothing to keep you from switching over to 64bit OS. Go for it!

If you have a 64bit processor there is very little reason to use a 32 bit OS anymore and most newer drivers are available in 32 and 64 bit versions.

Will 32-bit softwares work fine under a 64-bit OS? As the 32-bit softwares are coded to run on 32-bit OS, will they be able to show their actual power under a 64-bit OS.

^^

Yes, they will. Win 64 BIT OS's(XP/Vista/Win7) have WoW. Windows on Windows, emulator, which enable the 32 BIT application to run seamlessly. I have been using a 64BIT OS for quite some time, found no application/driver issue.

Upon time of installation the application is installed in different folder:

Program Files (x86) : 32 BIT applications

Program Files : 64 BIT applications

There is absolutely no issue.

what is the configuration?

Intel Pentium 4 with EM64(something like this)

Gigabyte Mobo 915 (GA-81915ME-C)

RAM 2GB DDR400 Mhz (Dual Channel)

HDD 40 GB Maxtor (will be shifting to 1TB Hitachi/WD):hap2:

Graphics Card (not yet decided)

PS: I will be using this system for HTPC purposes

for that config, I would suggest you to stick to XP. win vista will be too slow on that config.

If it is Intel Pentium Dual core, go for Windows 7 instead.

You were wrong desibond

I tried it to see the effects of 32 bit over 64 Bit.

It is slow only during startups and shutdown.

Everything else works as smooth as 32 Bit.
