I just called microsoft to activate my vista home premium, the guy on the phone said that the number of activations on my computer has expired and windows cannot be activted, what's the meaning of that and what should i do?

Well i suppose either you have volume license one or you have tried to activate it on diff machines. Is this ur retail copy ???

Buddy give us more detail about what copy of Vista is it. OEM, Volume, retail etc...

There is a built in feature in Vista. Where in it will allow you to use same license if you have not exceeded the limit of hardware upgrade on that installation. After which it would not allow you to use Vista IMO.
Say for example there is a limit on how many times you can change your Graphics Adapter, your mother board or your Hard drive, CD/ DVD drive etc. If that limit exceeds it will prompt you for activation for which only MS can help.

I would call back and talk to someone else and tell them that you purchased it and you insist on them helping you with activation. If you don't get any satisfaction, ask to speak to his supervisor and try again. You will likely only get the help you need if you make a fuss about it.

yes i did, their reply is what i am posted

I'm using an OEM license myself and got the same message while activating. Called up the number given earlier and followed the automated response prompts. I replied yes when asked if the OS had been removed from the previous machine and input the hardware ID as given in my Vista installation. Did you talk to someone or was it the automated response? Btw, the installation was on the same machine it originally was installed on, no hardware changes as such, only a couple of re-installations.f

A friend has also activated quite a few laptops using the OEM keys on the back while using warez media (HP etc don't give installation medias).

Does it give you an activation error code for example as below -

"Activation Error: Code 0x8007232b; DNS Name does not exist.”

Yep every extensive hardware change will prompt you for activation and if its again and again then gradually you reach the threshold set by MS in the OS.

ok,I have send e mail as they said to do but till i have no response, i will replay once they response otherwise i will wait till windows 7 available.

^ how did you resolve it ? Afaik, for a retail copy you can activate it as many times as you need as long as it is on a single pc

i think retail copies can be activated max 10 times.

Oh, I have a retail copy of xp that I've been using since 2000. Its oem copies that they make a fuss with

I hope windows gives us- Corporate Copeies of Enterprise editions which do not require Activation. Seriously man I usually have to send my engineers to get the formatting work done multiple times in a day, lotsa hardware changes, application changes, e.t.c pushes to O/S reinstallations.

^^ Yes Vista has certain tolorence set into it for number of hardware changes. If you alter the hardware significantly then it will ask to activate the installation again.
