Hi all,

I am trying to connect to a computer on my network, which brings up the window that requires me to enter my username and password. Every time I enter my username , it adds on my computername (ex. [computername]/[username]), thus preventing authentication since the user name is now no longer correct. Can anybody tell me how to stop Vista from adding on the computername? I am currently running the Vista Home Premium Version on my laptop and i want to access my download rig which is running XP.
TIA

Go to:

Control Panel\System and Maintenance\System

under "Computer Name, domain and Workgroup settings"

click on "Change Settings"

in the "Computer Name" tab,..click on "Change"

enter the "Full Computer Name" and try logging in from that name.

If you are connecting from XP to Vista, and that is indeed the cause of the error, then enter this username:

<XP Computer's Name>\<username>

Fill in the computername and username appropriately.

Doesnt work guys..I am using my laptop which is running vista home premium and i want to access a drive on my download rig which is running windows XP embedded.

I have accessed it sometimes in the beginning but now it adds computer name

use [downloadrigname or ipaddress]/username

and try to connect

if this does not work try this

[downloadrigname or ipaddress]/downloadrigusername

There can be many things due to which you are not able to connect to your XP machine to name a few....

  1. Are both the machine on the same network segment i.e. ip address, gateway etc
  2. Can you ping the xp machine from visa and vice versa
  3. Is there any 3rd party firewall installed or is the default XP firewall enabled.
  4. Does the UserName you are using even has a password, as a blank password won't work

The list can go on but this is are just the basic steps one can check....

YES
YES
NO,even windows firewall is disabled
It has a password

Sometime back, if came across same type of problem. After making some setting able to access.

After Installing VISTA and XP without password, worked.

Noted : Both Home Edition of Vista & XP have less security features wrt to Premium/Professional

Can you do this from a command prompt on your vista machine:

net use \\<XP computername>\ipc$ /u:<username> <password>

And after that try connecting to the share?
