Vista or Linux ??

Hey ppl,
Got myself a new 200 gb Hard Disk so that i can finally install Vista and still have ample space for movies, games etc.
But now after reading a thread here concerning windows v/s linux i am confused :( so instead of enquiring there itself i am making a new thread here..(hope thats ok)
i have no idea abt linux so i would like you all to recommand me something which resembles windows the most :)
any other info. would be helpful !

Thanks.

as you must have seen in that thread, PCLinuxOS 2007 would be suitable to you as you are migrating from windows.

although Ubuntu is the most widely name on Linux, pclos is better for new users who don't have experience with Linux.

You can download it from internet or find it in some computer magazine (if you don't have fast broadband connection).

i will say linux mint KDE edition as KDE is more like windows so will suit you
Linux mint is based upon ubuntu expect the fact there is zero configuration required after installion and all things like codecs, flash, java etc come preinstalled. Basically it ubuntu with some touch-up:bleh: so you don't have to cry on forums, irc that my mp3's & dvd won't play:eek:hyeah:

1 more thing, does this have a feature like auto shutdown at a specific time, a download manager and a software similar to netlimiter .. I know thats asking a lot but my downloads and stuff depends a lot on it :p

Hey ppl,

just to add..i underwent a test at Welcome to zegenie Studios to find out which linux distro wud be the best for me and the results were that it recommended Linspire,Freespire,Madriva and OpenSUSE in the same order..it said that u may also try PCLinuxOS 2007 (but mentions that u need some basic linux knowledge) somewhere as a footnote !

so can recommend me 1 of the above suggested distros.

^^ :S Err.. his HDD wil be filled if he installed Vista + Linux.. Get Linux dude :) any distros with latest and best support will suit you ;) I would suggest Ubuntu and Sabayon :p

YEs very much the same
boot from the cd the rest all is piece of cake :)
BEST OF LUCK

I downloaded the LiVe PCLinux2007 CD and tried booting it.
Boot always failed coz of some cryptic lines asking for imputs and choices.
mdcheck sum and everything else is fine for the iso

I have a year old versions of Ubuntu, kubuntu and edubuntu and they all boot fine,Just pop in the CD and boot with CD as first device

Is there any limits to the kinds of systems that can use Linux, coz I meet all the Min Req for PCLinux2007

vista default install takes like 9gb and you throw in the apps and page file and you go onto 15gb. plus you need some free space for defragmentation to work properly and future chances of growth.

so my suggestion would be to have atleast 25gb dedicated "vista" space.

linux fits best in 4-5gb space without counting the home area. best is to keep that separate anyway.

may be useful since you are looking for programs

*shutting pc off & other sheuduleing options= cron

*download manager are many like simple wget or Downloader for x or Kget etc etc

For download manager use D4X, it works very well and for torrents you have azureus.

Amarok can handle all classic ipods without trouble gkpod is installed.

For ntfs read/write access there is ntfs-3g

For virtual machine use Qemu.
