Vodafone GPRS and iPhone Apps - Need Help

Hey,
I got a Vodafone prepaid connection a few days ago since I got to know about their GPRS - Rs.95/- for 500MB/Month plan.

Now here's my ordeal, I had a hard time getting the GPRS to work since I wasn't able to get the GPRS settings from Vodafone despite of my numerous attempts of calling the customer care and messaging on their toll free numbers. I'd get errors like Write the IMEI Code properly or it'd say settings will be sent shortly, anyway, I got it working by some guy's guide with the help of iPhone configuration utility.

BUT, that's when the biggest let down came, I can browse the web via Safari, use the facebook app, BUT I cannot connect via the Mail App or IM Apps like whatsapp, etc.

I tried chaging the apn to www like someone suggested earlier but that totally disconnects the internet, so I'm sticking to GPRS as the APN or portalnmms. I tried numerous other settings, but nothing seems to work.

While on the other hand, I can easily access IM apps using Airtel GPRS services.

Just when I thought I could totally move to Vodafone, I got this major setback with their GPRS services. Calling CC and others didn't help, they suggested I opted for the Vodafone Mobile Connect, which is too expensive and totally goes against the whole reason I bought the connection in the first place.

I request all members to help me out here!

Am I doing something wrong here? How do I change the APN to www without having to pay extra? Is there ANY way around it?

OR

I get an Airtel connection and get the Rs.98/month - 2GB Free plan on it.

In the end, both providers have similar tariff plans. And to think about it, I got such a good number from Vodafone, I was planning to stick to it, only if these damned apps worked, I'd stay with Vodafone.

What seems to me is on Vodafone Live only HTTP protocol can be accessed while the mail app (IMAP) cannot.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers

I am using a Iphone 3GS with a vodafone prepaid card and have activated GPRS/EDGE the same way you did with iPhone configuration utility. I can browse the web via safari i use all 3rd party applications and all apps which need a GPRS connection.

"How do I change the APN to www without having to pay extra? Is there ANY way around it?" Yes you can change your APN by opening this "unlockit.co.nz" site from your iphone broswer and you can easily change your APN or you will need to install the patch from Cydia called "APN Editing".

One more thing i would like to tell is that as i said i have the same vodafone prepaid connection and using it with Iphone 3GS i used iPhone configuration utility in which for the APN i used "Portalnmms" , Proxy server was "10.10.1.100" and Proxy port was "9401".

That's all i did with my Iphone settings and i can use everything which ask's for a internet connection no extra plan nothing just 10kb/10paisa.

Thanks for the reply!

Hmm, its real odd why I can't check my mail using the Mail app or use the whatsapp app while all apps work for you. Have you specifically tried the IMAP service on the Mail app?

Thing is I can use Apps that require HTTP access. I was able to change the APN to www but I get the damned 'Could not activate cellular data network - You are not subscribed to a cellular data service.' error message.

Thanks for the APN changing utility, I tried that yesterday, it works with portalnmms/GPRS as the APN but not www.

Hearing you, I feel there is hope to get these apps working on my iPhone. I'm on the Rs.95/month for 500MB download plan, could that be at fault? Otherwise I'm able to utilize the GPRS via the apps with my Airtel connection.

Could there be some iPhone setting faultering? I'll try to change the APN from GPRS to portalnmms and trying again.

If possible, could you confirm any IM app that works for you? I could try it too. Cheers

You need to have vodafone mobile connect activated in order to check mails and use IM applications.

Normal gprs does not support these functions.

Bleh, that sucks man, I got this for that only. Although I will be able to check my mail via Safari, but that's not what i want.

BUT, Airtel will support this right?

Cheers.

Yep, works on 2G too. Here's a quick guide, install iPhone Configuration Utility. Goto Configurations on the left panel and click on New.

Enter any name and identifier for the newly created configuration and select "Advanced options" from the options available in the Window.

Enter the APN as portalnmms and the IP address as 10.10.1.100, port as 9401 and leave the Username and Password as blank.

Now click on your detected iPhone on the left hand navigation panel and goto Configurations, you shall be able to see your newly created configuration there. Now all you have to do is click on Install and you're good to go.

Before doing this, make sure your Vodafone live services have been activated by messaging Act VL to 58586.

Cheers.
