I have been using a Nokia E71 for the last 2 years. I have also been using Nokia's push mail service since the time I bought that phone.

Now, since the push mail app runs in the background, the data connection is always on and the EDGE logo can be seen next to the signal. Whenever I make/receive a call the data connection goes on standby. So when I'm on a call, no mails are sent/received. Once I put the phone down, the data connection becomes active and I my mail syncs again automatically.

However, since the last 5-6 weeks, my mails have been syncing even when I'm on a call and the data connection doesn't go on standby.

I always thought the 2G networks don't run voice and data connections simultaneously! Can someone please explain?

you can not do anything about it.

it is a hardware property.

Class B and C GPRS/EDGE hardware does not support both GPRS/Edge and GSM simultaneously.

You will require a device with Class A hardware to make those work simultaneously.

^ Yeah, looks like he missed the last bit.

Anyway, 2G supports voice and low volume/speed (mail sync) data transmission, while 3G supports voice and high-speed data transmission, a good example of which is Video calling.

It also depends on the handset being used and its support by the Operator.

Hope that clears things. :)

That's the thing. Same handset, same operator. It's didn't work simultaneously for the last 2 years since I started using it, but since the last few weeks, it does!

hmmm...possible upgrade of their infrastructure which supports the same? Or perhaps, something was preventing it from working earlier?

Yes probably infrastructure upgrade.

I have experience this is reliance and airtel.

With airtel when my EDGE connection is On and i make a call, the data connection goes on standby but with reliance it stays as it is and does not go on standby.

hmm although blackberry works together most of the times.
Not on my 8900 with Vodafone...
If on call will not receive email or chat.
Does being in Roamin all the time have anythin to do with it (atleast in my case) cause i think i get emails/chats while i am on call, when am in mumbai which is my home nw.

@ raks

please check if it is really active and not just showing the connectivity.

keep something for download, make a call and see if download progressed.

on my old moto fone i used to see connectivity all the time but that was just an indication of the coverage in the area for data connection.
