VSNL, after all testing has finally rolled out Wimax broadband for Bangaloreans
They have launched it with 140 towers covering entire Bangalore

Tata indicom broadband had frequent problems because of last mile overhead connectivity. Wimax wireless connectivity should resolve this.

Nothing great in that.Same old dubba tariffs.
Probably you missed out reading special offer :(
Book a prepaid 3 months and get 3 months free (On average a 256 Unlimited at Rs 475 per month for next six months)

Googlepages? Are they nuts?

And 140 towers??? Wimax is supposed to need fewer towers, not more. God knows what this lot is up to.

What ever it is but the same company is also digging up Church St. laying optic fibre!

found out (i think) after asking 3 ppl which COMPANY was responsible for the mess.

Your saying this on the basis of their plans ?

Prepaid assuming they are unlimited

Postpaid has unlimited too.

Question is what throughput and how consistant ?

..given the Ajoy Eric Lal incident i'm not really holding my breath on this.

yeah, his was a wired connection but still left quite a stink

Unimpressive plans.. Lack of authenticity.. Looks fake..

Well its not about requiring fewer towers.

In the end it boils down to the hardware used.

If they are using a small transceiver like telisma which reliance is using, you need good network. The download will be great even with tower which is at longer distance. but the upload capabilities of the customer end hardware is limited. Specially with the hardware they are providing.

There is better hardware available but it is expensive. Reliance is charging just Rs.500 for Telisma which is fair enough.

So to have good network more towers are needed.

In Mumbai, reliance wimax is doing well compared to other cities. I can get connection to 4 towers from my place. And mind you i live on outskirts of mumbai.

When there are soo many towers they are assured of atleast 1 good tower with proper signal and proximity to everyone.

I guess vsnl.wimax is a reseller :D he has created a webpage in Googlepages and trying to promote some offer of tata! Well if they accept 475 monthly, I m on for it.. what say vsnl.wimax? but I have to buy a wifi card.. damn my Mobo..

You dont need wifi card for wimax. The hardware is different and needs to be mounted on your roof. Like a dish antenna there is a small antenna that they mount on the roof and a cat5 cable comes to your PC from there.

Mounted on your roof? You don't necessarily need even that. There are laptop cards for wimax... of course they may want to enforce that you remain stationary, in which case a roof mounted thingy could be quite suitable for them.

Ive heard of them running trials over the yr here.

What good is wimax if u cant get it on the move ???

once those laptop card come on the market i expect it should work.

Tho a stationary aerial would get better reception i think.

Thats what they are using at the moment. Powered Antennas. You cant buy your own wimax hardware as of now. So you need to stick with whats they are giving you.
You are not limited to you spot in any way to be honest. You can take your antenna anywhere or log into your account from your friend's pc who has wimax. Works with reliance. At the moment there is a loophole as well. You can logon from multiple locations at the same time :P
So you can your friend can share unlimited accounts if you want to :P

Is Reliance available all over Bombay and more necessarily...Vashi? (their big HQ is a few kms from here) Any numbers I can call to enquire? I also hope they have 256/300kbps ultd with no ports blocked and decent routing for some very nice international TF2 & COD4 goodiness :P
